after a long absence, let’s welcome teen sarah pants back to the posh d. stage!! YAY FOR AWKWARDNESS!

in the spirit of halloween, i offer you three posts from october of 1994, featuring such highlights as:

driver’s ed (remember when you thought it would be impossible to drive normally?)

keanu (obvs!)

astroworld!!! RIP!

mac & cheese (unlike my love for keanu, my obsession for mac & cheese has never weakened)

10/11/94

This whole week is one jam packed full day after another. I had Driver’s Ed until 6:45, then finished my English essay, ate dinner, studied for my Chem test, then dutifully researched for my English project [ed. note: nerd!!]. I even taped Wings instead of watching it (whoah). I also remembered about the CFC bake sale tomorrow, and my lovely mother baked lemon bars for it.

The math test was easy– I checked for careless mistakes (kinda) and everything. I drove horribly today– almost ran into another car twice (the second time it was reeeeally close). I felt so embarrassed and stupid and I’m sorry if I can’t remember to slow down, look every which way, signal, turn the wheel the correct hand way and the certain number of degrees, all at the same time. I do one thing right, but then something else will go wrong. Frustration down in the City of Sarah. And more to come tomorrow– greeeeat.

10/14/94

I can’t drive!!! Arghhh! Or, should I say, I can’t turn!!! I am very discouraged! But I do like driving on freeways.

I watched the second half of “Much Ado About Nothing”!!!! Can you believe it’s finally on the Disney Channel? Keanu is so mean and evil– I love it!!! I now have it on tape!

Becky and Talena came over and we spent about 5 and 1/2 hours working on our video– and we still haven’t finished! I wish I had a better *talking* vocabulary. I do ok when I’m writing a paper, because I have time to think about it. But when I’m talking, I say “you know” and “like” and “cool” so much! I hate it!

P.S. We went to Luby’s yesterday, and I got the first scoop of macaroni & cheese from the pan.

10/23/94

On Friday, I FINISHED DRIVER’S ED! It was a very momentous occasion. Can you believe I finished?! How exciting!!! As I was walking across the parking lot, the band was playing “Indiana Jones” and I began to kind of march, holding my head high, feeling like they were playing for me [ed. note: ahh, teenie sarah, you are adorbs!].

Then Becky, Emily, Mom and I went to Fright Fest at Astroworld. We went on the Looping Starship, waited in line for Texas Cyclone but then it closed, then went to the Horizons theater to see this scary film. It’s where you lie down and the screen is on the ceiling and it’s almost like you are there. The movie was kind of stupid, but some parts were scary. At one part, this guy catches on fire, and Emily shouts out, “STOP, DROP AND ROLL!” and it was very funny.

Then we went to a Haunted House and I got sooo scared before we went inside. But I kept saying to myself– they’re all just normal people. We went inside and I cowered behind Emily with a tight grip on her shirt (I think it is now two sizes larger). At first I was scared and screaming my head off, but then I started to yell, “You’re all normal people! Just normal people!” Then it started to get fun and this grim reaper came up to me and I screamed in its face “YOU’RE A NORMAL PERSON!” and it kind of backed off. It was hilarious.

Then Emily and I rode the Viper twice– once in the back car, once in the front car. There was this reeeeally cute guy named Aaron that was checking the safety bars, so I said hi to him. Then the announcer said it was his birthday so I told him happy birthday. Cool!!

so i feel the need to apologize in advance for the fact that there is absolutely NO MENTION OF KEANU in today’s installment of dear diary pants. I KNOW, I’M SORRY. on the other hand, it’s slightly reassuring to know that i didn’t think about him for every second of my teenage years (just maybe 90% of them?).

there is, however, mention of molly ringwald, the choir pop show and… OMG SUPREME SOUP & SALAD!

10/8/94

“It’s been a hard day’s night, and I’ve been working like a dog!” –Beatles [ed note: thanks for the clarification!]. Whew!! The theatre festival was today, and boy did I work! Filling in ballots and ribbons, assigning panels and judges, etc. Sure, there were lulls, but it was still pretty busy! And it was worth it– the festival was a definite success! One of the best parts was when we announced the Superior ribbons on the balcony. Boy were those kids excited! It was a small group (two schools) but I think they had fun.

Dad got home today [ed note: from new orleans], and it sounds like he had a blast! My stomach growls when I just think about the food they had there! Mom and I were going to see “The River Wild” but it was sold out, so we just ate at Supreme Soup & Salad and went home.

I watched “Sixteen Candles,” this 80s movie with Molly Ringwald. It rocked! Leanna was right when she said that M.R. was the queen of 80s movies. Like that would ever happen– a popular, very fine, rich senior dumps his model perfect prom queen girlfriend for a shy sophomore who isn’t totally developed and not dazzlingly gorgeous! But maybe that’s what makes the movie so cool. Michael Schoeffling is reeeeeally fine! Then I watched “Sisters” and it made me cry. Falconer and Teddy were so good together! It was so sweet what he said to her, about him being her guardian angel and always being there with her. At least he’ll still be in TVland on ER [ed. note: teen sarah had no idea just how far falconer would go... that's right, y'all, we're talkin' bout george clooney!].

10/9/94

Dad is gone. He’s on a plane en route to Los Angeles, then to Indonesia. He won’t be back until November 16th. It’s going to be strange without him. I can already tell I’m going to miss him. It felt so neat being at the airport; I mean, I wasn’t even going anywhere, and it was still exciting. Maybe it was the thought of traveling to some faraway, dazzling place, or perhaps memories of my past travels. Maybe it was the voices of a million people, different dialects, suitcases in hand. Where are they going? It’s the smell, and the busyness; the voice over the intercom announcing flights; the big signs; the shiny steel; the long corridors and the people in uniform. I know, someday, I’ll be traveling too. Not that I don’t already, but still. It’ll be different when I’m older.

10/10/94

Today Mrs. S. really frosted my cookies!!! I mean, I’m sorry, but I can’t remember everything she says– I need a tape recorder or something. And what’s wrong with asking questions? That’s why I’m asking you, because I didn’t understand what you said the first time! UGH!

The Pop Show went pretty well. The best part was when Raina H. sang and played the piano to “Winter” by Tori Amos. Wow! I already knew her voice was fantastic, but I’m impressed every time. She sounded like Tori Amos too. It was very beautiful. Mom says she has potential. So, if Raina is ever a famous singer*, here is my proof: I KNOW RAINA H. SHE HAS A WONDERFUL VOICE AND WILL BE FAMOUS. SHE KNOWS ME TOO. SHE CAME TO MY BDAY PARTY IN 9TH GRADE. Thank you.

*ed note: raina isn’t famous, but she’s still a super cool person, and we’re friends on facebook! yay!

in today’s installment of deary diary pants, we’ve got MAJOR THINGS AFOOT. i won’t spoil them, but let’s just say there’s some big developments regarding teen sarah’s high school theater career (did someone say LETTER JACKET HOLLA!), her obsession with grades and her even bigger, bordering on unsane obsession with keanu…

so, throw some “ace of base” into yr itunes and journey back with me to the Year of Sophomore Sarah!

9/8/94

I think I’ve come to the point where I just don’t care about my grades. Well, I don’t want to make a C or below or anything, but if I got a B in Chemistry or Algebra, I wouldn’t commit suicide. I think the reason for this is that I know I’m not one of the best, so why compete? In English, where I know I’m good, I want to keep my A. I think I’m just tired of working and studying and want to become one of those “entertainment non-reality vegetables” that Mrs. Williams is always warning us about.

Had my first voice lesson with Tina C.!!! I was nervous but mostly embarrassed about my voice. She was talking about how these two girls that she taught were going to try out for “A Chorus Line” and how sensational their voices were (one of them was T., and ok, if she makes it, I won’t be a happy camper) and I felt so ashamed. I know my voice isn’t anything special, and she was probably thinking– oh my gosh, this girl is awful! I hope she doesn’t quit her day job [ed. note: like i had a day job to quit... unless you count high school]! I can’t even begin to teach her! But Mom reminded me that I’ve never had voice lesson and never sang professionally, etc. But still.

I filled out this poll in Yo! [ed. note: YES! yo! magazine still exists! at least i think it does]. I loved doing it. I put Keanu Reeves in for about four answers. I don’t know why I enjoy doing those so much– just because I like thinking of my favorite things or conceit or ? I wonder if they’ll use my name?!

*****we interrupt this dear diary entry to bring you the following breaking news: WE HAVE REACHED THE END OF DIARY #2!!! I KNOW!!! MAJOR MILESTONE!! somebody get me some champers stat! and behold, written on the last page:

Coming soon to a journal near you…

Homecoming

Christmas

School Gossip

More Facts on Keanu Reeves <–[ed. note: NOT A LIE!]

And much, much more!

i love that i included a teaser for my next journal. that is awesome. even more awesome? that i included christmas cos SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE Y’ALL! XMAS 4-EVS!!!

and now, let us dive into the first page of diary #3!!!! p.s. where’s my champers?!!!!!

9/11/94

I’m either going to have to write less or buy bigger notebooks– I’m going through these like a cat in a trashcan [ed. note: whaa?]. Hey, if I made it up, it doesn’t have to make sense [ed. note: ah, ok].

I read today that Keanu turned down the offer to do “Without Remorse.” Gee whiz!! The story’s so awesome! And the character would be such a challenge!!! (just think– if it hadn’t been for Keanu, I would probably never have read it). But I understand where he’s coming from– he says he doesn’t want to get stuck in the “action figure pigeonhole.” He wants to keep doing the variety of movies that has been his trademark, and I’m glad. It sets him apart from the rest. Plus, in the book, the guy sleeps with this girl and they fall in love, etc. Which would be bad!!! [ed. note: LOLZ]. So, as you can see, there’s always a good side to everything.

9/12/94

I got a 99 on my Chemistry test [ed note: nice to know the "i don't care about my grades" phase lasted all of four days]!!! Wow!! Can you believe it?! And a 95 in Spanish. I didn’t have math homework, and so I didn’t have much to do. And I’m a Thespian! And 6 more points til my letter jacket!! Whoooeee!!! Now that I wrote all this stuff down, I realize that this was a pretty good day!! Plus, Biography is going to do a show on Gilda Radner on Wednesday, and Andy Garcia’s going to be in a movie tomorrow night!! Just another addition to my awesome tape.

Started “Hiroshima” for English today– probably going to be depressing but interesting. I’ll never forget about that book I read at Ascension about the girl with the glass in her head and the chopsticks and never grew. Scary.

Got a little article on Keanu playing Hamlet– it was on the side of this picture. People from Argentina and Australia have already bought tickets. Can you believe? And I thought I was a devoted fan [ed. note: ooh, little sarah, you are. you definitely are]!! But if I had the money, I’d do that too!! It makes me kind of mad to know that other people like him as much as I do [ed. note: oh shizz, this is starting to get scary]!!! I guess it’s cause I’m selfish. But hey– if nobody else liked him, he wouldn’t be famous, and I’d never know about him [ed. note: whew! psycho killer-ness averted!].

oh teenie sarah. i love you and yet… OH FOR THE LOVE OF PANTS sometimes i wish i could pretend like we didn’t know each other.

but, ahem, the fact that i still own that KR tape means that we’re more alike than i perhaps care to admit.

ANYWAY at least i don’t spazz out about grades anymore. and driving? it does get easier, teenie sarah, but it definitely doesn’t make me feel like i’m on the path to adulthood. just stop trying to make me feel old already! gah!

now if you’ll excuse me, i think “a walk to remember” is on and I NEED TO TAPE IT.

9/6/94

I’ve got the BAD DAY BLUES. Actually, it got a little better towards the end. I left my bag with my history stuff at home, so Mom had to bring it. I practically failed my Chemistry quiz on polyatomic ions even though I’ve been studying since day one!! Uugghhh!!!! It just makes me so mad!!! I forgot all about the “ite”s. Let’s just hope I do better on the Double Quiz tomorrow.

I like writing with a sharpened pencil a lot better than my usual stub. Anyway– our history project went ok, and I left my history bag in *there* too! I went back to get it, and Talena had gotten it for me!! English was ok, even though Mrs. Williams doesn’t listen and thinks her opinion is the only one! In Algebra the test wasn’t too bad– but that doesn’t mean anything!!

It was also my first day of Driver’s Ed. I can’t believe I’m learning how to DRIVE!!! It’s so strange! All of my life, I’ve perceived people who can drive as being a lot older– like your license sends you on your path to adulthood. And now… it’s me!! And I’m not even close to being an adult [ed note: 16 years later, i'm still not even close]! Weird feeling. By the way, I got a 98 on my Personal Essay! Yay me! And guess what, I left my bag in the Driver’s Ed room and when I went back to get it, it was locked! AUUGHHH!!! You can see why I don’t carry a purse.

The highlights of my day were: I didn’t have a lot of homework, and “POINT BREAK” was on!!! I taped it upstairs and downstairs I taped all of the good Keanu parts on my KR tape (I know which parts because of the time I tried to take pictures of the screen). I feel very satisfied. Plus, I can cut out the little thing about the movie in the TV Guide and stuff. Just call me a Keanu Junkie.

9/7/94

Yes, I have the bag!! Everything is safe and sound. Chemistry Double Quiz was easy– let’s hope I did well! Got a 100 on my history presentation– YAHOO!!

I watched the parts of Keanu I taped last night (that doesn’t sound very good) and I am proud!!! I feel like his mom or something!! [ed note: ok, i know i wrote a lot of swimfanny things about KR but that one? that one's just straight up weird]

For the past 2 nights, we’ve been watching this thing on PBS called “MGM: When the Lion Roared” all about when Hollywood was the boomtown [ed note: wha?]. It’s great– I love seeing Gene Kelly, Judy Garland, Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, Fred Astaire and all of the MGM alumni. What a glorious age.

P.S. Talena likes Ashur!! She’s so fickle– just last week she liked Jeff S. Oy, she reminds me of.. um, well, I forgot. Don’t worry Keanu– I’ll always be faithful.

I KNOW, i know, there’s been some doozies in the past but OH MAN. you guys. the beginning of this next one? BEYOND CRINGEWORTHY. in fact, my sophomore self is actually kind of scaring me, esp. cos she seems to have jumped out of the pages of my diary and INTO MY CURRENT LIFE WTF.

let me explain.

a few days ago, i got this email from my v. v. sweet dad:

Sarah,
I see in this morning’s paper that today is Keanu Reeves’ brithday. He is 44!
Love Dad

of course, i thought this was super cute, so i decided to tweet about dad’s email. and THAT, readers, is when sophomore pants sarah rose from the grave to haunt me into an early death due to Extreme Mortification.

an example of the 18 comments that ensued:

hell i remember when you went to the dogstar concert in 10th grade!

Yeah. Even I remember your Dogstar fandom. Wow. 44. There is no spoon.

I remember your cut-out from the movie theater!

Didn’t Maurice sport a Dogstar sticker? Your dad is pretty awesome.

yeah the day after the dogstar show I think you showed up to hooligans corner with your new dogstar shirt and beanie proudly wearing them like merit badges and that’s why i remember…

AUUGHHH!!!!!!!! MASSIVE TRAUMA TO THE BRAIN!!! FACIAL APPEARANCE IN PUBLIC IS TERMINATED!

i mean, i know people remember me as a nerd, but THIS?!!!!

GAH.

now that any and all chances that i may have been considered cool in high school have been BUTCHERED BEYOND RECOGNITION, i decided to whip out my diary entries from labor day weekend, fifteen years ago. i mean, i might as well *own* the crazy, right?

plus, i’m hoping that this post, as a sacrifice of my last shred of pride, will trigger some kind of exorcism so that sophomore sarah will quit her vicious attacks on my 30-year-old dignity and return to her resting place in my diary, where she belongs!

uh yeah… we’ll see if that works out.

9/2/94

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday, dear Keanu, happy birthday to you! And many more… Happy 30th, Keanu!!

I just held my own private ceremony! I sang and played my birthday present music box, then I lit my never-before-lit Summer Holiday candle (my favorite), sang again (in a whisper) in front of all of his pictures, asked him to make a wish, then blew it out.

Last night I didn’t write because we went to the football game and I was late getting to bed. Talena was on the news! Right after we went through the metal detectors, this reporter guy asked her all these questions, and later we found out that it was Ron Stone Jr. So we left the game early to see if she made it, and sure enough, she was on television! She only got to say a sentence, but still! And they showed a picture of the line, and Mom and Dad were in it (and Talena)! We won by the way.

I got a 100 on my lab report! WOW! We have a Math test on Tuesday. Yuck.

It’s LABOR DAY WEEKEND!! YESSSS!! We’re going to “Wear It Again Sam” on Monday!

Jeff M. was visiting at our school today– he stopped by our table at lunch. I feel bad because I invited him to Talena’s party cuz I didn’t think she would mind, but she had taken him off the guest list. Whoops. She wasn’t mad though.

And I feel awful (again) because Liz V. has been kind of kissing up to Mrs. Williams and I said something about there being something brown on her nose and I think she heard me.

Babysat for the Mayers– I’m going to help at Sarah’s slumber party this Friday! Wow, I feel old. Going to Nana & Pawpaw’s tomorrow so I have to go to bed.

9/5/94

What a glorious Labor Day!!! Mom, Rachel, Keriann, Talena and Talena’s mom went shopping! Our first stop was “Wear It Again Sam” and we spent about 1 1/2 hours there. I got a three piece grey pinstripe suit (polyester-yuck) for $16!!!! [ed note: i still own this suit] And I got a homecoming dress!! Wooo!!! It was only $28, and Mom got it for me. See? [arrow to my drawing of the dress] It’s so elegant and refined! I *knew* I’d find something there.

Then, our group ventured into the Hobbit Hole Cafe [ed. note: it's actually just the hobbit cafe] I’ve always wanted to go there (I loved “The Hobbit”) and I’m glad we did! The food was good. I had an Aruba with cheese and bacon; Rachel had a Gandalf (cool, huh?). Then we went to Timeless Taffeta, and Rachel got a Black Crowes poster and almost got this rockin’ but expensive tie-dye dress. Keriann got a Phantom mask.

Then we went– just guess– to the Discovery Zone to play Laser Tag!! Fun fun fun!!

And AUUUGHHH “Pointbreak” is going to be on tomorrow!!!!!!!! I’m going to tape it upstairs and tape the good KR parts downstairs on my KR video. I am soooo hyped!!!

P.S. I don’t want to go to school!

squee of the day: you’ve probably seen pictures of animals with casts before, but have you seen THIS BLOG ENTIRELY DEVOTED TO THAT PURPOSE?!!! (thanks sally for the link!)

“hands on a hard body,” one of my fave documentaries of all time, is gonna be… a musical? really? ok?

y’all it has been AGES since i dipped into ye olde high school journals, and i KNOW how much you guys have been missing yr daily keanu worship so… teenage sarah pants is back!

here’s a preview of what you will learn from the following two entries:

1. wow, i watched a lot of bad television in the 90s.

2. in addition to my infatuation with keanu, i was also totally obsessed with the mickey mouse club (MMC). just like i had a keanu tape, my friend becky had an MMC tape featuring her favorite videos and skits from the show. this tape was, like, GOLD. or, more accurately, crack. forget parties and drinking– the MMC tape was all we needed for a night of the high life. cos we were awesome.

3. i was totally a grade-obsessed nerd. this fact has already been established by basically every previous entry, but in case you were wondering, yep, still a dork!

4. shampoo in the eye = newsworthy.

8/29/94

Lesser load of homework than is usual for a Monday– I even got to the biblioteca to return the two Star Wars libros [ed. note: i was taking Spanish at the time, so, yeah] and renew the third one. I got an 86 on my Chemistry test. Ok, I guess. I can’t decide if I’m not trying hard enough or I’m careless or it’s just tough.

In Theater, Jade, Rachel and I are doing a pantomime about weeds. I think it’s funny.

Got to watch “The Nanny,” “Dave’s World,” “Murphy Brown” (yes! Scott Bakula was on!) and “Love and War” (I watched that when I was taking a bath) [ed. note: how v. margo tennebaum of me!]. And I watched some of Becky’s tape. I ffed to the exact place of Spot in “Newsies” (I rock) then I got to see “Runaway Train” and “Make Me Love You More” [ed. note: these are MMC videos, lest you think i was cool enough to love soul asylum back then. please see exhibit A and B]. I don’t know what it is about those two videos, but I am entranced. For “Runaway Train” it’s probably JC (he’s edging up next to Harrison); he’s so cute and fine!! He looks very lovable. I think it’s his hat too (even though I love his hair– I always pick guys with cool hair) [ed. note: this is so not true. see exhibit A]. And in “Make You Love Me More” it’s the costumes, and the song, and just because it’s the MMC, and soon Jennifer will be gone, she was so chubby and short when I first started watching it. Soon all the people I know will be gone– I resent the new young ones.* But that’s the way life goes.

*not for long, teenage sarah! cos “new young ones” = britney, christina and, most importantly, justin!!! oh how things change…

Exhibit A: MMC “Runaway Train”

like i said. cool hair.

Exhibit B: MMC “Love U More”

btw, the dancer with the long wavy hair? that’s keri russell!! holla!!!!!!

8/30/94

Progress reports: my lowest grade was an 89 in Chemistry. Yes! But it was kind of a bad day. I got to go to the Drama Club meeting, but I had to leave before it ended because I had a dentist appointment, but it was later than I thought so I missed the end for nothing. And then I missed JC singing “Two Princes” [exhibit C] because it was at the beginning of the show and I got back 7 minutes after it started! I had wanted to tape it on my KR tape [ed. note: i'm pretty sure i don't need to explain who those initials belong to] and I was mad because I wanted “Runaway Train” and “Love You More” on it and I’ll probably have to wait until, like, January).

But there were some good things– Mom signed me up for Driver’s Ed and voice lessons, finally!, on Thursdays (but that’s kinda bad because it’s my TV night, but since they’re 6:30-7, I won’t miss too much). I got my yearbook!! Very cool (I love all of the pictures of the seniors) but I’m mad that we didn’t get them at the end of last year– no signatures. And Mom gave up her appointment just so I could go to the Drama Club meeting. And “Wings” was on– repeat, but oh well!

I got shampoo in my eye and it’s reeeally bothering me.

Exhibit C: MMC “Two Princes”

squee of the day: mini baby pigs!!!!!! LOOK AT THEIR LITTLE SNOUTS!!!!

i love this “fallen princess” photo series. except i have one question– why is snow white’s house a wreck? what happened to all of those helpful mice and birds and baby deer and stuff? animal friends are flaky, yo.

have you guys seen the trailer for “the stoning of soraya m.”? it looks amazing. and also i’ll probably have to watch “step up 2″ like five times afterwards just to balance out the seriousness.

speaking of serious trailers, HOLY CRAP “the cove” looks SO HARDCORE. i haven’t seen a documentary this intense since “hands on a hard body.”

if you live in NYC, go to this park immediately!! and then send me a picture and make me jealous!!!!

have y’all heard of justin bieber, usher’s new R&B prodigy? this kid is like 15. just watching the video makes me feel kind of like a perv.

attention other YA readers (i.e. jessica): not yr mother’s book club posted their summer reading list.

OH MAN there is a major milestone in today’s diary entry. we’re talking, LIFE CHANGING you guys. and yes, it involves keanut reeves.

i hope you’re excited.

two things to know:

1. emily philips is my childhood best friend from lafayette. she’s been mentioned on le blog previously.

2. “superham” is a movie that keriann and i made about (isn’t it obvious?) a superhero pig. yes, it was awesome, and yes, i still have it on VHS, holla!

oh and yes, josh, there’s another tom arnold reference in this one. gahh the shame, the shame!!!

8/28/94

Last night, Keriann and Samantha spent the night, and we went to see “True Lies” (for me, it was the second time). It was still just as awesome (Tom Arnold is so fun-ny!).

MY “SPEED” CARDBOARD STAND IS HERE!!! YAHOO!!! It’s in the den right now– it’s *very* tall. And, of course, you know me, I am never satisfied. There is this white line/wrinkle that goes across it, right through Keanu’s face. AUUUGHHH!!!! But it’s not that bad. I can’t believe it’s mine!

And guess what– you will never believe this– Emily Philips came over today! Wowsers! Steven [her brother] is looking for a car, so they drove up this morning, are spending the night at her uncle’s, then going home. Since Talena and Becky came over, she got to meet everybody. We watched my K.R. tape (everyone was so blown away by my cardboard Keanu). I think I’ve really gotten Keriann into Keanu [ed. note: spoken like a true addict]. Friday night I showed them all of the good parts in “Dead Again” with Andy Garcia. After the KR tape, we watched “Superham” and then “Three Musketeers” which Becky brought over (and she lent me her MMC tape). We played Balderdash and Taboo, and then everyone left except Emily.

It was so cool her just being here. Like looking over and seeing her making a sandwich or being my partner in Taboo. We made stuff on the computer and colored it. Then we drove to Chili’s to meet Ms. Sandy [Emily's mom], Steven and Emily’s uncle. On the way there we did “YMCA” and I tried to wave to people (no one waved back!). It was so great having her here.

I watched the rest of “Wings” (yes! Helen and Joe are back together even though she said yes to Davis) and “X-files”! A very busy and thoroughly fantastic day.

me and emily, five years prior to my diary entry.

another awesome video from my friend sally’s media collective: love, the video game.

after a brief hiatus, my high school journals are BACK, and guess what.

sophomore sarah pants is STILL in love with keanu reeves.

you may also be *shocked* to discover that her taste in movies remains suspect, but not nearly as questionable as her clothing choices.

shopping at sam’s? really? oooooh little sarah pants… how much you have to learn.

8/19/94

Weekend weekend weekend weekend. Friday Friday Friday Friday Friday. Read. Movies read movies read. Sleep sleep sleep sleep sleep sleep. Keanu Keanu Keanu Keanu Keanu.

These were the thoughts going through my head today. It was a pretty good day– plus (and this is a big plus) I didn’t have much homework, just Spanish (did it), Algebra (did it) and an English Personal Essay (actually looking forward to doing it) [ed note: NERD ALERT].

We ate Chinese, then I babysat for the Mayers. We watched “The Princess Bride” and “Willie Wonka.” It was so funny– Sarah and Ruth acted just like Fred Savage does in PB: “Is this a kissing part?” “Is this scary?” “This is weird” Then later: “I like this movie!” It was so classic.

And now I shall depart to dreamland. Good night moon!

8/20/94

I woke up at 8:30, and I was very proud. Even though I love sleep, I always feel that if I sleep too late, I’ve wasted half the day.

I tried out the new $5 computer game Dad bought: “Don’t Go Alone.” It was ok, I guess [ed note: check out the AMAZING graphics from this game here]. I got to read my Star Wars too!!! We went out to eat at this little restaurant called Willie’s Icehouse and Grill; it was pretty good. Then we went to the dollar cinema and saw “City Slickers 2: The Legend of Curly’s Gold.” It wasn’t as good as the first, but I liked the Godfather parts. I really want to see those movies– not only because of Andy Garcia (and Al Pacino), but because I want to be in on all the jokes I hear about it. I want to quote from it. I want to witness the, um, legacy.

There was an awesome preview for “Speed”!!! I just might have to go to the $1 theater when it comes there and see it (maybe I’d take Keriann and Emily with me). I’m just scared that if I see it too much, the action will become predictable and boring and I’ll get sick of it. But with Keanu in it… nevermind!!

We sent to Sam’s afterwards, and I got a shirt and shorts (some of their stuff is actually cool) and we got Tom Clancy’s “Without Remorse.” That’s the soon to be movie that Keanu might be in!!! I had wanted Talena to come over but she was never home. I was saving my Keanu tape for her; I was keeping myself from watching it. But if she doesn’t come over tomorrow… Aunt Margaret’s coming, maybe I’ll show it to her.

Watched “Major League” and “Oscar” on TV. Charlie Sheen had such a cool part in ML. He’s pretty sexy, except when he’s stupid (like in “Hot Shots”). But don’t get jealous, Keanu, you’re still #1!

in today’s entry, we learn the following about the world of newly sophomored sarah pants:

1. whoah, tension with “the preps” brings out a little bit of mean girl! paging s.e. hinton…

2. rather than being protective of, say, cool indie music, sarah is defending 70s classic rock.

3. sarah’s dad has not changed at all since 1994. (i love you dad!)

4. CHEMISTRY SUCKS.

5. no, seriously, chemistry may actually end sarah’s life.

6. high school theater can be heartbreaking. like, i haven’t seen this much angst since sarah couldn’t get that speed poster.

7. sarah’s ultimate HS goal = letter jacket. oh yeah.

8/15/94

Well, the Steve Miller Band concert last night was so awesome!!! Whoooeeee!! I was surprised when I saw all of these preps, like Courtney C. and Karen W., walk in. Hello? Aren’t they supposed to like Mariah Carey? [ed note: ZING!] I was kind of mad and territorial– what gives them the right to come to my concert and suddenly start liking my music? But after a while, it didn’t bother me.

The band started off really well with “Swingtown” and ended the first half with “Rockin’ Me.” Now that was sooo cool! I recognized it when it first started, and I just stood up and started dancing and screaming and singing– it was such a blast. Everybody was rockin. We had to leave at 10:30 (it was from 8-11) to miss traffic and weirdo drivers [ed note: typical dad!!]. I was disappointed because they hadn’t played “Take the Money and Run” and “Joker,” although when we were walking to the car I heard “TMR.” It was so exciting– I’m so glad I got to go. I bought a shirt, black, and I wore it today (8/16/94– I was too tired to finish writing last night!).

Chemistry has been so frustrating! I get so mad and anxious and worried and depressed. How can I survive?

Today was better– we presented our Haiti project in History, and it went really well. I tried out for “Taming of the Shrew” and I had tons of fun beign Kate. I know I won’t get Kate or Bianca, but i might be an extra. And Chemistry was easy… until I got home BUT I don’t want to talk about it. I’ll just stay for tutorials or something.

this is actually my 8th grade picture, but i just got it from my parents, and my multi-colored braces are just too awesome not to share. also i totally got those earrings at 5-7-9.

I got to actually watch a half hour of TV (“Wings”) and I’m going to read even though it’s 9:46 because I haven’t been able to read my Star Wars book since Sunday and it is so fantastic and I love it and I love Leia and Han Solo and Chewie and Luke and everything!!

8/18/94

I received my sixth rejection today in theater– you guessed it, I didn’t make “The Taming of the Shrew.” Well, it’s not like that’s new or anything. It’s just that Mrs. Miller told our class that if we tried out, we’d have a good chance of getting a part– extras or something. But then again, it seems like I’ve been led on by her before.

I guess I’ll work tech. I hope she remembers what she said about the letter jacket because after the next play, which we just found out will be “A Chorus Line,” I have enough credit to get it. Well, maybe not, I mean, I haven’t even had a major or supporting role. I think I’m on Theater burnout right now [ed note: "on"?]. I just don’t care about it. And we have to dance a lot in “Chorus Line” and *everyone* knows that I have so much experience in THAT area. Eeeks!!

LINKS

check out the “first-ever artistic intervention in google street view.” um, awesome?!! my only question: did the google team think about driving down sixth street at night? cos that would be amazing.

for all of you hoping to be cat ladies in the future (ahem, jessica), please note that the bar for crazy has just been set a LOT higher.

speaking of cats, BAD CAT! but also, kind of pretty great (thanks selina, for the link).

today’s entry is a double doozy: little sarah pants begins 10th grade!

in light of the massive amount of text you’re about to read, i’ll skip my usual list. but, in case you were worried: yes, there is a keanu reference (several, actually!).

plus, PHOTO BONUS: JEAN SHORTS!

btw, GSL = good sportsmanship league, i.e. the club you join for yr college application.

8/7/94

As you can tell, it is now Sunday, and yes, school starts tomorrow. Well, on Friday, we went to “Clear and Present Danger” which was kinda complicated but very good. Harrison Ford, as always, was terrific. I babysat for Sarah and Michael Mayer. I played a Bible Game with Sarah, and boy does she know a lot!

The Mayers got home just in time for me to make it to the GSL lock-in. It was a lot more fun that I thought! Emily, Seth and Sarah R. were there. We cleaned the trophy case (I broke a leaf on a plaque) and made a banner: “Ruin the Rangers” with my own special drawing on it. Then the three of us went to the auditorium and played cards. Then some juniors (Katherine B., Jill, Lisa) came, and we played hide and go seek, freeze tag, and my own invention– “Throw Your Shoe, Then Look For It!” [ed note: AWESOME] We tried to sleep (I got 20 min, tops), and I got home at 5:30. I slept until 11:30!

Saturday night we went to the James Taylor concert at the Cynthia Woods Pavilion. I don’t know a lot of his songs, but I had a great time anyway. Since the concert was sold out, there were tons of people. There was not an inch of grass to be seen. Everyone there smoked! I looked out into the night and thought there were a lot of fireflies until I realized they were cigarettes. We’re going to buy tickets for the Steve Miller Band concert this Sunday-yes! Did I mention I bought the CD?

I got some notebook paper and a spiral and packed my backpack. I’m bringing a pic of Keanu and the “Not for Fred” to put on my locker. I called Samantha, Talena, Keriann and Rachel. Talena had a fantastic and busy time in London, Sam’s hair stayed short and she will be riding the bus tomorrow, Rachel liked camp and fell in love with two guys, and Keriann is just as bandie as can be.

Well, tomorrow I’ll officially start my sophomore year. Wish me luck!

P.S. I’m trying to ignore the fact that I have to get up at 5:45.

oh yeah, this is me, on the first day of my sophomore year. i’d like to divert yr attention from my jean shorts by saying that i cannot BELIEVE my legs were that tan!

8/8/94

Just call me Miss Sophomore!

What a hectic day! I got my schedule, but it was totally messed up. I was in two Theater II classes (no history) and in English IIK (instead of H). But I kept my head screwed on and simply went to the counselor’s office and filled out a change form. I finally made it to the last of Chemistry. I got my schedule change after 2nd period (fast, huh?). Here it is:

1st: Chemistry IK – Spears

2nd: World History H – Moore

3rd: Spanish II – Rivera

4th: English IIH – Williams

5th: Theater Arts II – Miller

6th: Algebra II – Clark

My chemistry class looks good, even though Rachel is the only one I really know well. I haven’t gone to History yet– I had Ms. Maglio for 2nd, and Andrea, Tony and Sean were in my class! Wow! I kinda wished I stayed in that one but… Spanish II looks ok. Maryanne, John and Mike are in my class again; Walt, Miranda and Mikel are the only sophomores. Mrs. Rivera seems pretty nice.

English is awesome! Talena, Seth and Rachel are in my class, along with Erika, this girl that I met at church that just moved from Temple. Mrs. Williams seems nice and very cool and creative [ed note: little did i realize that she was CRAZYTOWN]. I love all the curriculum we’re going to do: King Arthur, Alice in Wonderland, Shakespeare. Fabulous!

We have B lunch, which is half of class, lunch, half of class. It’s just the four of us, and maybe Corrie and Erika. Humanitas is right across the hall, so I can talk to Becky, Sam, Emily and Keriann. Our lockers are pretty close together. I put a picture of Keanu and the “Not for Fred” in my locker– ahhh, feels like home.

Talena gave me some chocolate from London and a postcard with, get this, Keanu Reeves on it. Cool, huh? And Becky gave me this old Bill & Ted interview, and it has the most awesome picture of him. Cha-ching!

Anyway, then I got to Theater with Rachel, Jade, Meredith and Amanda N. and Christine S. It’s a small class, but I am already so excited! We’re definitely doing Taming of the Shrew (Old West style) but that’s all they know. And Mrs. Miller wants us to do “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” and travel– that would be fantastic! And we’re going to do, like, a monologue a week, and Rachel and I are going to buckle down and look for a script for a duet. I’m so happy!

Algebra II was last– and Keriann’s in my class! Yeahhh! It’s Keriann, Rachel, Talena, Se and me. And Danny’s in it too. Can you believe it?

And some more good news– I get to go to the Steve Miller concert with Mom and Dad, and I’m bringing Rachel (bday present). What a great day!
