ok. I’ve got my two disc Christmas extravaganza up for the year. I started putting together a yearly Christmas mix 13 years ago… after a break last year to move to Texas, I finally finished up volume 12. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

A long time ago I think I came up with a list of Christmas songs that make me want to perform a self-lobotomy via my ears. Leader among that pack was Paul McCartney’s insipid “Wonderful Christmastime.” But here’s to the fine songs of Christmas. To me, it’s not Christmas until the alternative station is playing the Pogues’ “Fairy Tale of New York” and the Waitress’ campy “Christmas Wrapping” (in which white girls of the 80s hilariously “wrap”) and the Ramones’ “Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight).

Oh, and definitely seek out Big Star’s “Jesus Christ,” a sincere and uplifting song putting the Christ back in Christmas that nobody took seriously because Alex Chilton was in the midst of a Brian Wilson-type mental breakdown when he wrote it.

Only for a moment! I was like “Is this Hanson?” and then looked at the artist. No, I decidedly did not know that is the song from Love Actually, as I am apparently the only woman in the entire universe who does not love that movie But I do like the song!
