music for a v. merry poshdeluxmas

Y’ALL. CHRISTMAS TIME IS HEEEEEEERE! i am so excited!!!!!!

crass commercialism aside, i love everything about the christmas season. the baked goods! the sparkles! the love in the air! the prezzies! the moments of quiet reflection! repeated viewings of “love actually”! the tasty hot beverages! the warm hugs!

but one of my most favorite favorite things is, of course, christmas music. oh man, by 8 AM on december 1st you better believe i was having a little desk dance party with my favorite holiday jams!

ok, so i realize that it can be kind of annoying to hear the same canned crap in every store during the month of december, and it’s easy to get irritated by the second time (actually, yeah, the first five seconds) you hear alvin and the chipmunks “singing” about what presents they want from santa even though alvin is obviously not getting anything cos he’s a hooligan. but you guys, holiday music is like wine. franzia will always give you a bad hangover, but fine yet moderately priced (thanks steve at HEB!) wine is DELICIOUS and makes you feel all warm and happy and classy inside. which is exactly how good christmas music should make you feel!

with the hope of spreading joy and good cheer, i’d like to share with you the v. best of my holiday music collection from the depths of my itunes cellar. we’re talking vintage! we’re talking rare finds! we’re talking PREMIUM PANTS.

poshdeluxmas

list

so, put on yr favorite sweater, find a comfy chair and have a glass of poshdeluxmas cheer. let’s toast to a magical, sparkly, wonder-filled holiday season; may you all dance like the charlie brown kids and and feel it in yr fingers and toes just like billy mack.

and in the words of julian casablancas, I WISH IT WAS CHRISTMAS TODAAAAAY!

  1. That’s a pretty great playlist. I’ll try to swing back with a link to my yearly christmas mix as soon as I have it thrown together. Looking forward to sitting down and listening to this.

  2. Matt and I heard that Billy Mack song when we were decorating for Christmas on Monday! I, uhh, thought it was Hanson.

    Yay Christmas, thank you!

  3. I am so on the same wavelength. By November 29th, I had already put up THREE christmas trees. That’s right, THREE! One before Thanksgiving even! Take that, holiday spirit! That stuff looks soooo seasonal! you have no idea. Also, my Christmas was spent in the Southern Hemisphere last year, so I missed out on thing like cold weather, Christmas trees, and holiday decorations, so I have some making up to do.

My personal favorite is still “Christmas in Hollis” buy Run DMC. Might I also suggest Taylor Swift does Christmas?? Available at your local Target for $6.99? Because everybody loves America, right?

  4. meredith, you thought it was hanson? what?! you do know that’s the song from “love actually” right?!!!

jordan, i wholeheartedly salute you for putting up three christmas trees. believe me, my apartment is already crammed with enough glitter and fake holly to cover an entire macy’s store.

i DID actually listen to the taylor swift album (cos i love her. for real) on itunes, but, well, it’s pretty much a carlo rossi in my book. sorry taylor! you’re still super pretty!

  6. Good list!! I would add the version of “All I Want for Christmas is You” by that little girl who is in Love Actually. She’s got some pipes! Also “The Spirit of Christmas” sung by Ray Charles–you’ll recognize it from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

And I gotta admit, I love Amy Grant singing holiday songs.

  8. From the time I could zip up my own one piece pajamas it’s been Andy Williams. And he’s coming to VEGAS for two Christmas shows!!!

  9. Heather, you are so right! I love Andy Williams, and he has been in rotation since last weekend. Could not be this season without his awesome holiday voice!

  11. Just downloaded your Christmas mix! I’m sure you have a ton more holiday songs than this, so you probably have these, but if you don’t you need them: Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses and O Holy Night by Sufjan Stevens. O Holy Night is probably my favorite Christmas carol, and I love this version, it’s very simply and sweet.

  12. Target (once again) has some zip up on piece jammies for adults. Bunnies on the feet? Yes, thank you.

  13. Only for a moment! I was like “Is this Hanson?” and then looked at the artist. No, I decidedly did not know that is the song from Love Actually, as I am apparently the only woman in the entire universe who does not love that movie :) But I do like the song!

  14. A long time ago I think I came up with a list of Christmas songs that make me want to perform a self-lobotomy via my ears. Leader among that pack was Paul McCartney’s insipid “Wonderful Christmastime.” But here’s to the fine songs of Christmas. To me, it’s not Christmas until the alternative station is playing the Pogues’ “Fairy Tale of New York” and the Waitress’ campy “Christmas Wrapping” (in which white girls of the 80s hilariously “wrap”) and the Ramones’ “Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight).

Oh, and definitely seek out Big Star’s “Jesus Christ,” a sincere and uplifting song putting the Christ back in Christmas that nobody took seriously because Alex Chilton was in the midst of a Brian Wilson-type mental breakdown when he wrote it.

  17. I noticed that the Crafty Ladies didn’t make the list. I can’t understand why that might happen. Obviously, there was an oversight.

Outside of this one mistake – a fine job. Jennifer will be ecstatic to see N’Sync made the cut.

  20. ok. I’ve got my two disc Christmas extravaganza up for the year. I started putting together a yearly Christmas mix 13 years ago… after a break last year to move to Texas, I finally finished up volume 12. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

  21. A new fave christmas song for me is I don’t want to spend Christmas without You by NSync.
One that will always be on my x-mas list is ‘R2D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas’ by John Bongiovi.
