tasty business

so, what’s gonna be the new cupcake?

y’all, i come to you today with a v. v. pressing question that i REALLY NEED AN ANSWER TO SO PLEASE THINK HARD.

i’ve been wrestling with this issue for a long time now,  and after hours of scouring the internet and countless conversations and sleepless nights when i– ok, that’s actually a lie. i am actually a v. good sleeper and never let ANYTHING get in the way of me and my zzzzz except ok maybe vampire eric in a freezer. anyway! the point is, i really need yr help.

you know how cupcakes were like this huge food trend? some may argue “are” but that’s an entirely different debate that i really don’t have the energy for cos HELLO didn’t you just read the part about my sleepless nights?!!! so yeah, even though i personally have loved cupcakes since i was a little sarah pants, i think we can all agree that within recent years, they became this huge, like, foodie phenomenon that swept the nation and now every city has like 30 cupcake places and there’s cupcake EVERYTHING, like cupcake aprons and cupcake candles and cupcake erasers and cupcake jewelry and yes i own all of those things. basically, we’re looking at total cupcake market saturation, which means that the trend is already on its way out cos it’s impossible for something to be cool when *everyone* loves it.

so… my question is: what’s the new cupcake?!!

trust me, i’ve given this a lot of thought.

at first, i thought it might be cake balls.

cakeballs

pros: they are DELICIOUS. and also v. cute.

cons: i still feel kind of funny when i say the words “cake balls.” also, any cake ball non-food products would just look like lollipops. that can’t be good for cake ball marketing team.

then i thought, ok, what about froyo?! i LOVE froyo, and there’s a TON of places opening up in austin, so it’s obviously a big trend.

froyo

pros: froyo is extremely tasty business. and there’s all kinds of crazy toppings!! you can put WHATEVER YOU WANT on it!!

cons: froyo has kinda been done before. like, TCBY, anyone? plus, froyo-in-a-cup products would just look lame, and froyo-in-a-cone just looks like ice cream!

maybe this is wishful thinking, but now i’m starting to wonder if it’s mac ‘n’ cheese?

mac&cheese

pros: IT IS PRETTY MUCH THE TASTIEST BUSINESS IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.

cons: um… it’s not as portable as a cupcake? i really can’t think of any cons. ok, i know i’m biased but i would totally buy a mac and cheese shaped candle. and i already have a shirt with a noodle and cheese gazing dreamily into each other’s eyes under the words “soulmates” so i have *real* evidence that mac and cheese products can be cute.

you can see why this question has been keeping me up at night. as a devout foodie pants, i need to know these things! i need to be on the cutting edge! and i don’t mean that in the ice skating movie sense, although that is definitely a good sense, too.

help a posher out here! leave yr ideas in the comments!

LINKS

genies and fairy godmothers, take note: this is pretty much the best wish granting i have ever seen.

agent lover presents: corey haim in “the lost boys.” i think the rob lowe one is my favorite. or maybe “born to shop t-shirt?!!”

squee of the day: I NEED A TEACUP PIG IMMEDIATELY. hello, even ron has one!!! (thanks for the link, dad!)

  1. I agree about the Macaroni and Cheese! :) There is even a restaurant close to me that is ONLY mac-n-cheese! That is ALL they serve!

  2. It has to be something innocuous and childlike. It has to be whimsical, and non functional. So I’m going to go with cotton candy. Expect your first SoCo trailer selling $6 gourmet bags of cotton candy in exotic flavors any day now. Would you prefer lavender vanilla or raspberry truffle?

  3. JULIA. THAT IS AMAZING. seriously, you are lucky to live so close to a national treasure.

and josh, that’s actually a v. good call. lavender vanilla sounds DELIGHTFUL, and i don’t even really like cotton candy! but if it comes in adorable packaging from a soco trailer, i’m sold.

  4. Empanadas! There is already a trailer that sells them, and they are so meaty and delicious while being perfectly handheld. Although, it might be a little too “ethnic” to become a national phenom.

  8. I have to go with cake balls. I’m sorry, but saying it out loud is half the fun. Go on. Say it.

  9. PETIT FOURS! YES! EDEN! YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!!!!!

i first read about petit fours in the american girl “samantha” book and then i wanted them REALLY REALLY BADLY. obvs i’ve been eating them for years but just last year i FINALLY got the official “samantha” petit fours, i.e. an accessory for the doll.

    and yes, i’m 30.

p.s. the other idea i just had is macarons! C’EST DELICIOUS!

  10. I’ve been pushing for brownies and blondies for a couple years now. I love rich fudgey brownies so much.

    SO MUCH.

But I’ll totally go for petit fours, too. I remember the first time I ever had petit fours. I ordered them from the Swiss Colony catalog in high school because they were so cute, but also so I could get the free gift, which was a box of truffles.

  11. trish I LOVE THE SWISS COLONY TRUFFLES. we always got a box at christmas, i think from my uncle david.

    SWISS COLONY RULES.

  12. I love the cake balls idea. But then again, it’s hard to compete with mac and cheese. My favorite restaurant in Atlanta serves fried mac and cheese balls and they are TO DIE FOR. That could work because of the cute small portion fetish that made cupcakes so popular.

  13. Can it be rice krispie treats? They are so good and you can do so much with them.

  14. OMG RICE KRISPIE TREATS!!!!

this entry has made me hungry like a hippo. and i’m not talking the pygmy kind (although THEY ARE THE CUTEST).

  15. Where in the hell is puff pastry in my life? I haven’t encountered a good French pastry up in this Texas joint. Turnovers, how I miss thee!!! However, because puff pastry can never really be that colorful or whimsical, it will never be the next it food, alas!

Cake balls = too much frosting
    Petit fours = nast.

The final vote goes for MACARONS!!!!! OMG they are pure deliciousness!!

Also, I wish that pretzel croissants would catch on. I miss those too!

I would also support the empanada push.

Mac n’ cheese is obviously the triumphant savory option.

  18. Ooh! I’m for the Mac n’ Cheese. And the New Englander in me says add some Lobster. Rich!

For sweet I love funnel cakes ’cause they remind of all the fairs I would go to as a kid. Load ‘em up with butter and powdered sugar!
