Hello Pants World, Erica here to share the highlights of cruising, Greenhouse style. Most of you frequent blog readers are familiar with my family from previous posts like last year’s Mexico adventure and my Greenhouse Jewish Christmas– well, here they are again on a cruise!
How it all began: about 5 years ago during my parents 35th wedding anniversary, my dad declared that all they want as a gift for their 40th wedding anniversary was for their kids to save enough money to pay their own way on a family cruise so we could all vacation together. So after five years of anticipation the cruise finally arrived. Look at this happy couple as we take off from a port in NY. Forty years is a long time….

As you can see from the photo, we took off from New York. I know, I know, it seems like cruises are only supposed to leave from Florida or Galveston, but since the majority of the Greenhouses live in or near the city, the lone Texan Greenhouse (me) flew up so we could all leave together. Plus, there’s actually two benefits to leaving from NYC. First, you get to take awesome pictures like these:

Second, there are A LOT of people from New York and New Jersey on the boat which is automatic entertainment, i.e. just listening to the accents. Unfortunately there are a lot of things I wish I would have photographed for you, but my descriptions will have to do.
So we took off to start our adventure with the following itinerary: two days at sea, stop in Grand Turk, stop at Carnival’s private island Half Moon Bay, stop in Nassau, two more days at sea, and back to NY. And as you can see I was extremely excited..even about the towel.

So taking a cruise is a unique vacationing experience, and I shall break down all the major components of cruising in an effort to explain the awesomeness of cruising.
1. Food – Ok, who doesn’t love to eat, and on a cruise it is available 24 hours a day. Plus, there’s no bill at the end of the meal! Therefore, the majority of the day is based around meals. Wake up, go to the restaurant for breakfast, have a buffet lunch and then a 2 hour, 4 course dinner each night…um I know heaven! Warning: if you have small children with you (like my wonderful niece and nephew) they could get bored during dinner, but bring them a Nintendo DS and they will remain entertained.

But then if that isn’t enough food..after you have been dancing and drinking all night they have a midnight buffet for you. The usual favorite late night treats..pizza, burgers, fries. Just when you thought there was nothing else they could offer with food…they have a midnight Mexican Fiesta on the Lido deck! That is right, check out this spread…

2. Alcohol – They serve alcohol everywhere, all the time. It is pretty insane. They also have the greatest staff that works all of the time– no really, 7 days a week, multiple shifts a day, so you really get a chance to know them. Like our favorite Svetlana, who was our bar waitress. She hit it off with my niece.

3. Dancing – Ok so if you know me at all then you know there is no way I would go on a vacation without dancing being involved. Well after #2 what else is there to do but dance the night away. There are multiple options for dance venues..and as you can see dancing runs in the Greenhouse blood.

Even my niece had dance fever…with anyone who would dance with her.

4. Activities – At first I was a little nervous about being on the same ship for days, until I discovered the Carnival Caper which gave me a list of all the activities that went on from trivia to dance classes, there was always something to do. Plus you had the chance to win a gold “ship on a stick” which sounds really funny coming from the British entertainment staff. And of course we won them!!

5. Relaxation – I think the picture describes it all.

This private island had one of the most beautiful beaches I have been on..which is why they named the bar “I wish I could stay here forever…”

In conclusion, a cruise has all of the essentials of vacationing wrapped in one nice boat. In other words: it is awesome.
So, Pants World, pack your bags because I think we all need to go cruising.

P.S. I also think cruising is the perfect way to celebrate 40 years of marriage!!

so, as we all know, michael jackson died. which is so… weird. and crazy. and sad. of course, henri did the only thing you can do at a time like this: he hosted a tribute michael jackson sing-along! i can’t think of a better way to celebrate the gloved one (although vulture has a list of some pretty great contenders). check out the pics here.
LORDY have you guys seen the new extended trailer for harry potter?!!!!!! you guys I AM ALREADY TOTALLY FREAKED OUT. i mean, in a good, i know what will eventually happen so it’s all ok kinda way.
do y’all know what a capybara is? i didn’t until i saw this. and now… well… i kind of want one. not as much as i want a mini pig, but still.
this is the cutest yet most horrific fashion show ever.
Erica,
Gee you really got me in trouble as our 40th anniversity in two years, so I better get busy. Looks like a lot of fun. You have a great family. You didn’t pack that towel in your luggage did you?
I’m a big fan of cruises because of the multiple ports you can visit and the great food, especially having multiple desserts!
plus the picture of your niece on the boogie board is priceless! too cute!
erica, i started to get really jealous pants as i read yr entry, then i realized WE’RE GOING TO HAWAII IN A MONTH.
except we won’t have yr cute niece and nephew around. nor will i be getting my hair braided. so yeah, you win some, you lose some.
That looks wonderful! Oh man, I miss cruises. We need a friend cruise! Also happy anniversary, Mom and Pop Greenhouse!
Mr. Pitre – Thanks! And I would never steal the towel
, especially since they charge you $40 if you do.
Dude, you may well have converted me to the cruise! Which is impressive, because I was quite strongly against cruise ships in any capacity other than the setting for that one awesome Columbo episode.
I’m glad you had a great time!
