star trek just MELTED MY PANTS

HOLY TRIBBLES YOU GUYS!!!!!!

I SAW THE NEW STAR TREK MOVIE LAST NIGHT! AND IT WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

seriously. I. LOVED. IT. TO THE MAX. OF THE UNIVERSE.

first, let me explain how i ended up getting a sneak peak. henri told me that the alamo was screening “wrath of kahn” with a bonus of ten minutes of never-before-seen footage from the new movie. as mentioned previously, i’ve got trekkie in my dna, so of course i was excited! plus the screenwriters of the new movie were there, which was a nice little surprise.

heh. i had no idea that there was an even BIGGER surprise in store!

so “wrath of kahn” begins, and i was a little disappointed, cos i thought they were gonna show the new footage first. but then, all of a sudden, a few minutes into the movie, the film began to melt!

the audience audibly gasped, but INSTANTLY i knew something was up. i mean, i’ve spent enough time at the alamo to know that “burning film” means something AWESOME is about to happen…

oh sweet fancy moses i had no idea how awesome. cos the lights came up, the screenwriters took the stage (to “kill time” while the film was “fixed”) and all of a sudden…

LEONARD NIMOY WAS ON THE STAGE!!! CARRYING THE PRINT OF THE NEW MOVIE!!!!!!!! ZOMGGGGGG!!!!!

I AM NOT KIDDING!!!!!

everyone in the audience (including yrs truly) started screaming like frickin’ beatles fans cos SPOCK!!!! SPOCK WAS IN THE THEATER!!!!

(also, nerd alert!)

after the applause died down (five minutes later), mr. nimoy asked us if we’d rather see ten minutes of the new film or the entire movie. uh, spock, let’s be logical here. as in, MAJOR DUH!

UPDATE: here’s the official alamo drafthouse blog post, complete with video of leonard nimoy’s surprise visit!!!

so we got to watch the movie before anyone else!! in the world!! holy crap!! the official world premiere in australia didn’t start until a few hours after our screening ended, so HOLLA U.S.A.!!

now, all of that intro stuff was pretty amazing, and regardless of the quality of the movie, i would have gone home happy.

BUT but but BUT

i am happy to report to you that THE MOVIE WAS SO AWESOME!!! IT WAS LIKE, THE PHOTON PANTS!!!

i don’t want to spoil anything for you, cos part of my enjoyment of the film came from all of the amazing surprises, but i will say the following v. v. general things:

1. the casting is PITCH PERFECT. seriously, this cast WOWED ME: zachary quinto *nailed* spock; chris pine was a FANTASTIC kirk (all of the charm and swagger of william shatner without the cheesiness, plus, hello, he’s hot); i want to take chekov home with me cos ADORBS!; john cho was totally endearing (and suprisingly ass-kicking) as sulu; MAJOR fist pumping action every time you see simon pegg as scotty; and my FAVORITE: karl urban as bones– from his first minute on screen, he was hilariously cantankerous and tremendously entertaining. he pretty much steals every scene he’s in.

2. the pacing of the film is *relentless*, which i really enjoyed, esp. given the fact that some of the other star trek films are a bit… slow. abrams strikes just the right balance between exposition (not a lot) and action (HOLY CRAP, see #3).

3. the action sequences almost made me PEE MY PANTS!!!!!!!!!!! we’re talking TOTAL EDGE OF MY SEAT BUSINESS. in fact, i think i sat back fully in my chair for a total of five minutes during the movie. i know everyone’s been talking about the parachuting scene (which is totally killer) but what happens right AFTER the parachuting is even BETTER. in fact, my heart rate just doubled from writing that sentence cos ZOMG!!!

4. it is honestly a THRILL to see all of these beloved characters meet for the first time. the audience actually cheered when each character was introduced– seriously, major heart squeeing here. plus there’s a “new” relationship that will REALLY surprise you…

5. the dialogue is funny and actually (no really) BELIEVABLE. even the old cheesy lines that, ok, we all relish, have been given new life (and sometimes, uh, new interpretations) in the film. major kudos to the screenwriters!

6. the creatures! i don’t want to spoil anything, but yeah. there are a few really freaking cool monsters in this movie.

7. the cameos!!! ok, so there’s one major cameo which i will ZIP UP MY LIPS ABOUT, but henri said it was probably ok for me to tell you (actually, he told me, “no one will care but you,”) that there are TWO “FELICITY” CAMEOS!!!!!! YAY!!! well, one is a voice cameo (i had to catch the credits to make sure) but the other is meghan!! look for her on the ship’s crew!!! awesome!

so, yeah, that’s my v. general so-i-don’t-spoil-it-for-you review.

YOU GUYS I CAN’T WAIT FOR YOU TO SEE IT SO WE CAN TALK ABOUT IT! COS IT’S SO AMAZING!!!!!!!

AND I’M TOTALLY GONNA SEE IT AGAIN! COS YAY!!!

LIVE LONG AND PROSPER MY PANTS!

  6. There are “Felicity” cameos, too? I’m so in heaven anticipating this. J.J. Abrams never disappoints. (Was it a surprise to Henri, too, or did he know in advance?)

  10. HOLY FREAK.

Damon Lindelof was there?!?!?!?! I would’ve crapped my pants three times for that mess.

Firstly, I would have been psyched about the movie and all, but then APD would have had to call in the SWAT team to rescue Damon from my grasp.

I have serious LOST questions that I want answered NOW.

  15. As upfront as I am abt everything, even when the film melted I didn’t suspect a thing. However, the movie was fantastic! And I never would have ever thought that I might see Leonard Nimoy in person as SPOCK! doing the hand gesture twice and actually SAYING OUT LOUD, “Live Long And Prosper.” That he did I took as a ringing endorsement of the new movie, and it was more than well-deserved. The casting was indeed perfect, and Kirk was everything you’d want a Starship Captain to be, with the world’s best imagineable crew. Roddenbyrty’(SP?) original vision of Earthlings as the “aliens from outer space” instead of the other way around will Live On For Centuries In The Hearts And Minds Of Everyone!

    I just ate a chicken; I’m horny.

  17. That is totally awesome! Tim definitely knows how to do it right. I can’t believe he kept that from everyone. Good to hear that Star Trek didn’t disappoint because I figured it could’ve gone either way.
