sxsmas 2009 schedule: take one

i cannot BELIEVE that sxsw (which henceworth will be known as sxsmas, cos it really is the Most Wonderful Time of the Year– major props to my friend joy for that one) is NEXT WEEK!!! HOLY CRAP!!

here’s my usual process for sxsw planning:

1. rsvp to every single day party, ever.

2. use the official schedule to make a list of every band i might possibly even maybe want to see

3. TOTALLY SPAZ OUT COS THERE IS TOO MUCH AWESOMENESS

so, here’s the first draft of my evening schedule (don’t even get me started on the day shows). you’ll notice that there’s lots of conflicts, but that’s a good thing– i like to keep my options open, yo!

the only band missing from my schedule? CRUCIFICTORIOUS. gah. landry, PLEASE TELL ME you’re playing a secret show. for the love of the dylan planthers, PLEASE!

p.s. yes, that IS the *real* third eye blind, not some “ironic” indie band. i cannot WAIT to go to their show and repeatedly yell “JUMPER!!!!”

p.p.s. i’ve asked pantstributor erin with a little e to post her schedule, so tomorrow you’ll get to read her perspective on what not to miss at sxsmas!

  1. i wish you would step back from the ledge, my friend.

I, too, am all over M Ward at Central Presbyterian, and I’m going to stay for Camera Obscura, cause I just can’t pass up that kind of crazy awesome acoustics opportunity.

There’s just SO MUCH AMAZINGNESS to fit into one tiny little week!

Deer Tick is my number one, can’t miss band. I missed them last year due to some very bad luck and planning on my part (one of those, “oh, I don’t have to catch them at this show, I can catch them at the one tomorrow” deals where I never actually got to see them.). Their album War Elephant was probably my most played album of 2008 and I will NOT be missing seeing them this year!

  2. We’ll be at the M. Ward/ Cold War Kids auditorium shores show and we’re at Emo’s on Saturday afternoon to see Family Force 5. Friday evening I think we might see Anberlin at the PureVolume house 2am.

I’m getting together with Shiny Toy Guns at some point to do some stuff for the music festival I work at in the summer. We don’t have passes so we’re trying to catch what we can for free.

  3. i really like thao with the get down stay down (probably because the lead singer is asian). and i’ve always wanted to see explosions in the sky live. where are you getting your day show information?

  4. Friday night, midnight, mohawk patio, The Hold Steady.

Lift your beer up high for me and spill a little on yourself.

    Make some memories, Sarah.

  5. Damn. I have an 8-5 job now and will totally miss out on the free dayshow events. Plus I am pregnant so I will also totally miss out on all the free party sponsored by alcohol that give away free alcohol.

    Damn.

Please, drink a free drink for me!

  6. I really want to see M. Ward and Hold Steady, but I fear that the wristbanded masses will get denied.

i think we have a lot of the same shows Sarah! But here are a few of my additions:

Wednesday, 11pm – St. Vincent, at Central Presby.

Thursday – midnight, Decemberists at Stubbs. Also probably impossible.

Bishop Allen at 9 at Mohawk
Delta Spirit, 10:30 at Cedar St

Friday, Gordan Gano 1am at Parish (he’s the singer and songwriter of the Violent Femmes. I have a longstanding fetish for that band)

    Loney Dear, 11pm at Habana

    Saturday
    Electric Touch, 6pm, Stubbs
Explosions in the Sky, 8pm, Aud. Shores (as a Friday Night Lights girl, you must be going!)
DJ Shadow, Midnightish at Stubbs. Wow.
    PJ Harvey, 10pm, Stubbs
New York Dolls, 12:30 at “Smokin Music” whatever that is (I suspect a tobacco company promo club)
Dinosaur Jr 12:45 Cedar St (wow pt II)
Okkervil River 1am at Parish v. Shearwater 1am at Hilton Garden (who’s the joker that put these two at the same time? Lame.)

Damn that’s a lot of goodness

  10. I’m so glad I can rely on my friends and husband to plan most of my SXSW schedule. I’m sure I’ll look at it over the weekend and add a few items of my own, but this saves me a lot of work! I trust your tastes.

One exception: when talking to the aforementioned husband last night about a Crucifictorious t-shirt, he told me he read something on your blog about them playing a secret show during SXSW. I knew it probably wasn’t true and that he had probably misread it… but I had just a little bit of hope that it was true, and that Tim Riggins would be there…

  11. I know all this rumor of a secret show..so not gonna happen. But I do think that any girlie night girls that are going to the Explosions in the sky show (me included) should get together so we can have enough energy that Tim Riggins might actually show up.

Also Josh, I did not see that Gordon Gano will be here. That makes me happy.
