growing up

how to enjoy the fruits of adulthood without actually being one

lately, when it comes to my friends, i’ve been feeling like the polar opposite of matthew mcconaughey in “dazed and confused.”

like, my friends keep getting older, while i stay the saaaame aaaage.

and while i’m not ready to give up any of my peter pantsing (what WHAT!!! straight from my own brain, folks. my own genius brain), i actually don’t mind that most of my friends are outpacing me in this whole “growing up” thing. cos it usually means i get to do more fun stuff, like eat free food at weddings and PLAY WITH BABIES!!!!

oh man, friends having babies is awesome! first, cos it’s weird (in a good way) to see features from yr friends’ faces in a baby. like, seeing brad pitt as an old man but less creepy. second, cos it’s awesome being a crazy aunt sarah and squishing and spoiling the baby, all while storing up embarrassing stories about mom/dad to share after the kid hits puberty so i can then be “cool” aunt sarah.

unfortunately, most of my friends with babies don’t live in austin. so you can imagine my EXTREME EXCITEMENT when, last friday, i finally met the first powersuite baby, nathan!!!!!!!

look at him!!!!!! that baby came from a powersuite girl!! can you believe it?!!! sofia, to be exact. which is why she’s in the picture.

i’ve been DYING to meet nathan since he was born, and i was also looking forward to seeing sofia be a mom as opposed to the quirky girl i knew in college who made weird faces and did funny dances with me in our room.

in a surprise twist, it turns out that mom sofia is actually the SAME GIRL as powersuite sofia!!! who knew?! although i think nathan is not as easily entertained by sofia’s crazy dance moves as i was back in college, which i guess says something about his taste (discerning) and, in contrast, mine. anyway.

sofia is, of course, an amazing mom, and it was so sweet to see her with nathan. i mean, she’s, like, responsible for this little guy! holy crap!

nathan, trust me– you are in v. good hands. however, i don’t think i can say the same for yr little frog friend. yikes.

it’s too early to tell if nathan’s inherited any of his mom’s traits, like her winning smile or her, uh, lack of observation skills (oooh the stories i could tell you), but i CAN tell you that he is definitely taking after his crazy aunt sarah in the “tasty business” arena.

don’t worry, nathan. i often drool on my menu too.

to encourage his pantsing development, i gave nathan one of my favorite books, “counting with wayne thiebaud,” which not only teaches children how to count but also instills in them an appreciation for fine art AND baked goods (i say that like they’re not the same thing, ha). i could tell that nathan liked it, cos he immediately began trying to eat it (funny, i had the same reaction the first time i saw the book).

i should mention that dan, nathan’s dad, was there as well, although i didn’t talk to him as much as i would have liked cos HELLO LOOK AT NATHAN’S CHEEKS. THEY NEED TO BE KISSED.

one of the (many) reasons sofia is an awesome mom is cos she’s decided to speak to nathan in her native tongue, swedish! he’s gonna grow up bilingual, meaning he will then pick up other languages easily and all of the kids in his spanish class will envy him (and his kickass swedish chef impression).

here’s sofia, singing nathan’s favorite “swedish mouse” song. warning: this video may reduce you to a puddle of squee.

NATHAN I LOVE YOU!

and don’t worry, yr crazy aunt sarah will see you soon– hopefully at christmas, when she can teach you all about the joys of holiday food.

so, babies are obvs the best thing about friends getting older. but the second best is pretty much just as awesome.

i’m talking, of course, about PUPPIES!!!!!!!!

pants world, allow me to introduce you to the new and improved katz family*!!!! (*not that they weren’t great before, just less pettable)

yes, after recently marrying, erica and josh took the next step of adulthood and adopted a super cute beagle named duncan!

duncan is a girl, btw. and yes, there’s a story to that, and yes, you can ask josh and/or erica about it cos i’m mainly concerned with the fact that DUNCAN IS A TODDLER MAGNET.

it’s like, once you get a dog, all of the other grown-up stuff sort of landslides into yr life. you can’t escape THE BABIES!!!

which, as a friend of the Grown Ups, is v. v. beneficial to me. cos hanging out with josh and erica now means hanging out with duncan, which ALSO means hanging out with lots of chubby toddlers. i am officially the champion of this situation.

that’s jade, who has the biggest cheeks in the world and the coolest legwarmers, ever (in case you can’t tell, the white line runs down to a spider near her feet). and here’s my other fave duncan groupie (she loved the tail):

duncan handled her celebrity with grace and aplomb, although she quickly learned what mom sofia (and now, mom julie! second powersuite baby in the hi-zouse!) already knows: kids are frickin’ exhausting.

while duncan fell into a coma, crazy aunt sarah had a smoothie, hung out with josh and erica, then still had the energy to watch the oscars, eat lots of fancy appetizers and drink champers.

further proof that even though i love babies and puppies, i’m not quite ready to give up the peter pants.

ghostbusters 3!!! for real this time!!!!!

squee of the day: BUNNY IN MA HAND!!!!!

vulture’s suggestions for future cinematic explanations of mickey rourke’s face made me, literally, laugh out loud (NO i will NOT abbreviate it).

the trailer for “funny people” is up– what do you guys think? i mean, i want to see it but the tone of the movie is a little different than i anticipated. maybe it’s just the weird pacing of the trailer…

on repeat all day: the new single from phoenix (FYI you can download the mp3 from that page, after the intro).

  1. I think that Nathan and I have to hang out. I totally chew on menus as well.

And Josh and Erica, with your beagle…. sigh. Please stop being so photogenic and great and everything. How are the rest of us supposed to keep up.

I agree, the trailer for Funny People is the latest in a long line of weirdly paced trailers that are more confusing than anything else (that Elizabeth Banks thing… ghosts? killer stepmum? what?)

And Sarah, I’ll be peter pantsing along with you for a while, too!

  2. can we still be peter pants, even if we have grown up things like babies or dogs? or careers? cause i’m not ready to trade in neverland. and god knows there’s nothing grown up about my bank account.

DUNCAN I LOVE YOU. my very first book when I was a kid was called “I am a beagle.” It was about a dog who is a beagle, in case the title isn’t clear. i love beagles.

    Nathan’s adorable! Those cheeks!

  3. Duncan + Nathan in one blog = way too much for 730am. In a totally good way, of course.

And I love those leg warmers! I am totally making my babe some if it turns out to be a little girl. What a cute idea! I can just see my mom rolling her eyes at them! Squee!

  4. Duncan would like you to all come over and pet her. In exchange, she will aggressively lick your face.

  5. DUNCAN! I love beagles, we had a series of them growing up. They are sooo sweet and wonderful with toddlers! So the magnetism is a good thing.

Nathan is gorgeous, and he totally has Sofia’s eyes! I like the little mouse song, so precious.

I think Funny People looks really good. I noticed that the little girls are the same as Knocked Up, so I looked them up and they are, indeed, Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann’s little girls. I love Leslie Mann.

  6. Ok. Just watched Funny People trailer, I think it looks good. But why was it so darn long, it’s gives me the feeling like they gave away all the good parts already.

  7. I loved reading this post because I feel the same way a lot of the time obvs. Also, Stephanie’s brother is going to be in Funny People. I’m not sure in what capacity but he shot for 2 days for it a couple of months ago. I think he just does some stand up in it but he’s been hanging out with that apatow crew a lot.

    Hey! I left a comment!

  8. It strikes me as a little funny that you speak of Peter pants, but I don’t think Peter Pan actually wears pants. They are leggings or tights or something, right? Not that this matters, and not that you actually meant his physical pants, but it just caught me as funny.

I love seeing photos of you & Sof together in the same photo. Sigh. I muchly hope that we all find ourselves in the same room someday. Or perhaps the same outdoor patio on a warm-enough but crisp fall day.
