today’s entry is a double doozy: little sarah pants begins 10th grade!
in light of the massive amount of text you’re about to read, i’ll skip my usual list. but, in case you were worried: yes, there is a keanu reference (several, actually!).
plus, PHOTO BONUS: JEAN SHORTS!
btw, GSL = good sportsmanship league, i.e. the club you join for yr college application.

As you can tell, it is now Sunday, and yes, school starts tomorrow. Well, on Friday, we went to “Clear and Present Danger” which was kinda complicated but very good. Harrison Ford, as always, was terrific. I babysat for Sarah and Michael Mayer. I played a Bible Game with Sarah, and boy does she know a lot!
The Mayers got home just in time for me to make it to the GSL lock-in. It was a lot more fun that I thought! Emily, Seth and Sarah R. were there. We cleaned the trophy case (I broke a leaf on a plaque) and made a banner: “Ruin the Rangers” with my own special drawing on it. Then the three of us went to the auditorium and played cards. Then some juniors (Katherine B., Jill, Lisa) came, and we played hide and go seek, freeze tag, and my own invention– “Throw Your Shoe, Then Look For It!” [ed note: AWESOME] We tried to sleep (I got 20 min, tops), and I got home at 5:30. I slept until 11:30!
Saturday night we went to the James Taylor concert at the Cynthia Woods Pavilion. I don’t know a lot of his songs, but I had a great time anyway. Since the concert was sold out, there were tons of people. There was not an inch of grass to be seen. Everyone there smoked! I looked out into the night and thought there were a lot of fireflies until I realized they were cigarettes. We’re going to buy tickets for the Steve Miller Band concert this Sunday-yes! Did I mention I bought the CD?
I got some notebook paper and a spiral and packed my backpack. I’m bringing a pic of Keanu and the “Not for Fred” to put on my locker. I called Samantha, Talena, Keriann and Rachel. Talena had a fantastic and busy time in London, Sam’s hair stayed short and she will be riding the bus tomorrow, Rachel liked camp and fell in love with two guys, and Keriann is just as bandie as can be.
Well, tomorrow I’ll officially start my sophomore year. Wish me luck!
P.S. I’m trying to ignore the fact that I have to get up at 5:45.

oh yeah, this is me, on the first day of my sophomore year. i’d like to divert yr attention from my jean shorts by saying that i cannot BELIEVE my legs were that tan!

Just call me Miss Sophomore!
What a hectic day! I got my schedule, but it was totally messed up. I was in two Theater II classes (no history) and in English IIK (instead of H). But I kept my head screwed on and simply went to the counselor’s office and filled out a change form. I finally made it to the last of Chemistry. I got my schedule change after 2nd period (fast, huh?). Here it is:
1st: Chemistry IK – Spears
2nd: World History H – Moore
3rd: Spanish II – Rivera
4th: English IIH – Williams
5th: Theater Arts II – Miller
6th: Algebra II – Clark
My chemistry class looks good, even though Rachel is the only one I really know well. I haven’t gone to History yet– I had Ms. Maglio for 2nd, and Andrea, Tony and Sean were in my class! Wow! I kinda wished I stayed in that one but… Spanish II looks ok. Maryanne, John and Mike are in my class again; Walt, Miranda and Mikel are the only sophomores. Mrs. Rivera seems pretty nice.
English is awesome! Talena, Seth and Rachel are in my class, along with Erika, this girl that I met at church that just moved from Temple. Mrs. Williams seems nice and very cool and creative [ed note: little did i realize that she was CRAZYTOWN]. I love all the curriculum we’re going to do: King Arthur, Alice in Wonderland, Shakespeare. Fabulous!
We have B lunch, which is half of class, lunch, half of class. It’s just the four of us, and maybe Corrie and Erika. Humanitas is right across the hall, so I can talk to Becky, Sam, Emily and Keriann. Our lockers are pretty close together. I put a picture of Keanu and the “Not for Fred” in my locker– ahhh, feels like home.
Talena gave me some chocolate from London and a postcard with, get this, Keanu Reeves on it. Cool, huh? And Becky gave me this old Bill & Ted interview, and it has the most awesome picture of him. Cha-ching!
Anyway, then I got to Theater with Rachel, Jade, Meredith and Amanda N. and Christine S. It’s a small class, but I am already so excited! We’re definitely doing Taming of the Shrew (Old West style) but that’s all they know. And Mrs. Miller wants us to do “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” and travel– that would be fantastic! And we’re going to do, like, a monologue a week, and Rachel and I are going to buckle down and look for a script for a duet. I’m so happy!
Algebra II was last– and Keriann’s in my class! Yeahhh! It’s Keriann, Rachel, Talena, Se and me. And Danny’s in it too. Can you believe it?
And some more good news– I get to go to the Steve Miller concert with Mom and Dad, and I’m bringing Rachel (bday present). What a great day!

oh sweet fancy pants!!!!! THERE’S A TRAILER FOR THE GHOSTBUSTERS VIDEO GAME! come june 2009, i *know* who i’m gonna call!
everyone who’s famous is in “prop 8 – the musical,” but the thing that makes it EXTRA awesome is the shrimp cocktail.
thanks to ambo, i listened to some tracks from the upcoming “cadillac records” (and watched the trailer). mos def as chuck berry? i’m sold.
speaking of movies i want to see, have you guys seen the trailer for “adventureland”?!!! holy pants!! i am so ready to quit my job and work at a crappy carnival in 1987. who’s with me?
after looking at this fabulous fashion book, i realized that i covet barbie’s wardrobe even more now than i did as a kid. um.
I love the fact that all your classes revolve around which of your friends are also in the class with you. I do remember comparing schedules, FIRST THING, when we got them. And lunch was the BEST friend time.
yes! I’ve been coveting what little bit of the Ghostbusters video game that I’ve seen. I just hope that you can get online and play with your friends as the various characters. Ang lost me to Gears of War 2 this week. Horde mode is really addictive. Ok, I guess I just proved that I’m a big geek. One week til the Austin recon mission/Buttnumbathon adventure begins. I hope that we’re able to sort out everything that we need to sort out.
Haha, LOVE the jean shorts! Jorts!
I love when you post your high school diary entries. You know I get to (um, have to) hang out with 40 high school girls every weekday, and I wish they were more like you were in high school.
Oh, and have you seen the trailer for the movie Little Ashes? It has my boy (okay, he can be yours) Robert Pattinson in it as Salvador Dali…looks really good!
I like how yr legs were super-tanned but the rest of you is still pale as a ghost.
Also yr black jansport is a v. mature choice. Mine at that age was bright orange.
1. CUFFED jean shorts! I love the 90s!
2. “Ruin the Rangers?” You were probably playing my high school, the Clements Rangers! If only I was in GSL too, or went to any of my school’s sporting events, we could have met even sooner. And clashed! Grrr!
3. I was going to say something to the effect of what Erin said. It’s really something of a miracle/mystery how only your legs tanned.
“I looked out into the night and thought there were a lot of fireflies until I realized they were cigarettes.”
OMG, so precious and whimsical and naive! Some of those fireflies were probably even left-handed cigarettes.
Also, I STILL HATE THIS OTHER MEREDITH. Especially b/c she got to put on an Old West-style Taming of the Shrew production with you.
I wonder how it is, now having witnessed the true depth of your obsession, that before these Dear Diary Pants entries, I never knew of your Keanu crush?
Josh Katz, you went to Clements? I went to Terry, and we were also the Rangers, and we HATED you guys for stealing our mascot.
Although your drill team was called the Clements Stars and not the Rangerettes (as ours was) and that never made sense to me.
meredith, i think we all know why you never knew about my keanu crush. no, it wasn’t shame. it’s called: christian bale.
erin, note that, in the picture, you can see my backpack from the previous year, which was hot pink. obvs, i was totally more mature in the 10th grade.
Doc W… I miss hooligan alley : )
Are we sure that that isn’t a tan and that she’s wearing dark nylons under jean shorts? Those legs just look super unnaturally tanned. If not that’s definitely an amazing tan. How would one even go about that?
Williams was possibly the worst teacher I had in High School. Crazy doesn’t even begin to describe . . .
joshkatz, I’m pretty sure we were playing Clements. I remember because that was the first HS football game that we had to pay just to park – I think that’s the one . . .
Ahhhh . . . the memories.
I used to be able to tan my legs in the summer, too. I wonder what happened to our pigment? Question, though: why two backpacks? Was it for style options, or you just really carried a lot of books?
I was at the same James Taylor concert…I was not smoking…that is all…oh, and I have a man crush on Henri…btw, do you know who I am?
I honestly think sophomore year was my favorite year in high school although American Studies junior year rocked.
English II had the best crazy times ever- Kill Claudio!; Us or Them!; “You’re turning into ‘Brave, New World’, TV is your soma!”; kidnapping the Alice doll. Awesome times.
World History was great too- Brent making us watch the Ben Hur chariot scene over and over to try and find the one real death; the goat head soup (please tell me there is a diary entry for that!).
I didn’t realize that we had half our classes together.
I can’t wait for more!
I’m late, as usual, but I would like to say that I too love the fact that who’s in your classes is the defining feature of whether they’re ok or not, and also I loved being reminded of the stress of waiting to get your schedule and finding out if your friends are in it, etc.
Our teacher in Lubbock who taught us Shakespeare etc was also crazy (like, seriously crazy, but a good teacher), so maybe there’s something to that.
