dear diary pants: “how romantic!”

ok guys, this entry is as nerdalicious as they come. if i had any doubts about my high school dorkdom, i need to look no further than my activities on august 2, 1994:

1. macaroni grill reference (and i was already riding high from the olive garden mention last week!!)

2. JEAN SHORTS!

3. my celebrity crush has progressed to the point where only initials are necessary.

4. while my peers were listening to pearl jam, i was rocking out with steve miller.

5. my sci fi library wish list

6. star wars romance!!!!

7. my understanding of romance, period.

8. inability to talk to boys my own age (obvs this is not news to you)

note: “fred” is a stick figure cartoon i drew for a couple of years, mostly on book covers. i actually still have the waiter’s drawing of fred in my “special” box, which just goes to show that my nerdiness has not, in fact, dissipated in the slightest.

8/2/94

Ahh, another “satisfactual” day of summer. Mom and I met Aunt Margaret at the Macaroni Grill. She bought a townhouse!! The restaurant is cool– you can write on the tables (they have paper laid on it and crayons), so I started a new cartoon with Fred. Our waiter’s name was Jerry; he was really nice. He thought Fred was funny, so when he brought me my doggy bag, it said “Not For Fred” with a picture of Fred crying. It was great! It [ed. note: "it" being the cartoon i drew of fred] was about Fred seeing famous people there (K.R.) and how he left his waiter, JERRY, a big tip. I drew some fake money on the table and put “Tip From Fred– Cha-ching!”

Afterwards, we went shopping, and I bought the Steve Miller Band’s Greatest Hits cd and the Mickey Mouse hat I’ve been wanting. I also got a pair of jean shorts and underwear (oooh, fun).

I went to the library to check out some books (Star Wars, The Stand), but everything was checked out. I reserved three books I wanted, so hopefully… and I can borrow “The Stand” from the Biggs. I checked out “Jurassic Park” to read again [ed note: RIP michael crichton!] and an Alfred Hithcock collection.

I then proceeded to watch the end of “Star Wars,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and most of “Return of the Jedi.” I’ll watch the rest later. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to get those books– I love Han Solo and Leia’s relationship (the fact that I love Harrison Ford adds to that, of course). I mean, they fight and think they hate each other, but they find out that actually, they are attracted to each other, and end up in love. How romantic! I love their first kiss. That’s the other reason for the books– I want to read those so I can get to “The Courtship of Princess Leia.” As you can see, I am again in my romance mood.

ok, this STILL makes me sigh, dreamily.

And tonight was neighborhood night out. Everybody on our street (well, most of us) grouped together on the Reynold’s lawn. It was great. It was *almost* like the neighbory feeling we had in Lafayette. Everyone was chatting, laughing and the kids (oh how they remind me of Amy, Emily, Corey, Ashley, Eric, Meredith, Sara, Mandy and I) were playing and having a splendid time. Brad came out for a while, but I’m not too good at conversation with him. I spent most of the time talking to Mrs. Mayer and playing with Michael and listening. I got my Happy Massager for Mrs. Davis because her back hurt. Then, later, I played hide-and-go-seek with Sarah, Ruth, Tyler, Kyle and Ruth’s friend May. It was so classic– I had more fun than talking to the adults!

LINKS

if you read nothing else on the internet today, you MUST read, er, watch this slideshow on vulture which extols the virtues of the “twilight” film over the book. it’s so right on (and hilarious), that i almost devoted my entire blog today to this one link. also, it’s a relief to know that the movie will, in fact, be better than the book, although i have the sneaking suspicion that the vulture entry is actually more entertaining than the  movie itself.

vulture also has a ridiculous guide to paranormal paramours, which isn’t as good as my vampire guide BUT has waaaay better pictures.

you can stream chinese democracy on the G&R myspace, btw. i’ve been listening to it, and actually, it’s not half bad! and by that i mean, “not half bad for a late 80s metal band missing slash.”

squee of the day: BUNNY WITH WHEELS!!!!

john sent me this awesome video of a toddler on a TOTAL power trip. seriously, kid is in for a reality check the next time he lifts his arms up at the grocery store.

ever wonder what happened to the girl who played the blind melon bee? she’s cute! and like, seemingly normal! for some reason, i’m surprised.

That’s . . . pretty much still my idea of romance. Which goes a long way towards explaining a lot of things.

  6. WHO WAS THIS OTHER MEREDITH?!

I also totally had the Steve Miller Band’s Greatest Hits CD. I got it from Columbia House, what what!!

Also, I guess you never got The Stand from the library, since you still haven’t read it. THIS Meredith would be happy to loan it to you, since the Biggs (?) fell down on the job.

    Finally, HAN LEIA=4EVS!!!!!

  7. Ah jean shorts. I had these awesome white jean shorts at some point in the early nineties. I miss those things. There’s a picture out there. I’m just glad it didn’t show up with all of the other awful photos from my Posh interview. Did you see the hilarious Kristen Stewart interview from Letterman? All I’ll say? “Let’s hope it’s Berlin” http://defamer.com/5095694/david-letterman-sinks-fangs-into-charisma challenged-twilight-star?autoplay=true
