my squee quota for the year has pretty much been filled, thanks to a monday night with my favorite little lady, naomi! you may remember her as the Guardian of Mac ‘n’ Cheese or from the Mango in the Pool incident.
her parents acted like i was doing them a favor for babysitting her, but nobody was fooled– obvs, *they* were doing *me* the favor.
here’s how we spent our fabulous evening:
1. Gardening

naomi helps out her mom and dad in the backyard all of the time, so she is basically a Professional Gardener at this point. in case you weren’t aware, “gardening” involves lugging a tiny (but heavy) bucket of water across the yard, spilling half of it on the way (well, the grass WAS thirsty) and then carefully pouring it on the same patch of earth, over and over again.
also, it’s important to sing while you’re gardening. the plants like that.
since naomi has an immense amount of experience, i decided to ask her for some gardening tips.
if anyone can understand those tips, please let me know.
2. Eating, aka Beating Up a Piece of Bread

gardening really builds up the appetite, so naomi decided to eat a piece of bread. apparently, she likes to torture her food before she eats it, just so THE BREAD KNOWS WHO’S BOSS. i feel you, girl.
my favorite moment in this video, btw, is when she sees the camera and says, “CHEESE!” i felt like i was pulling that prank where you record a person posing for what they think will be a photograph and then you post it on the internet. which is exactly what i did. sorry, naomi.
i realized that naomi and i are v. alike in how we enjoy our food, except for the whole drumming the crap out of the food thing (well, i *do* tend to drum on the table when i’m particularly enjoying something). ok, well, i kinda realized that a few months ago when i tried to take away her mac ‘n’ cheese and she screamed bloody murder. but yeah, we both make it v. v. clear when we’re enjoying something (i loved her robot noises). we also know how to put gross foods in their proper place: AWAY FROM OUR PLATE. in my case, it’s onions. in her case, it’s crust.
3. Cultural Appreciation

after eating, we headed into naomi’s room and carefully examined a piece of art by jabbing at different objects on the print. museums usually frown on this, but i like to think we were taking “interactive” to the next level.
continuing our foray into the fine arts, naomi performed a rousing and extremely creative version of “old mcdonald had a farm.” apparently, she doesn’t like to look at the camera when she sings, probably because she wants the focus to be on her ART, not her adorable face. she’s SO the anti-britney.
4. Goodnight Moon

naomi is quite the zookeeper, and she takes excellent care of all of the creatures in her menagerie. it was bedtime for bunny and baby, so naomi made sure to tuck them in with gentleness and love. she even remade the entire bed, because their comfort is her top priority.
btw, my favorite part occurs just after the 45 second mark, when she realizes she’s forgotten about the pillow.
5. Monkeying Around

while some kids are into webkins and bratz and other slick new creations, naomi likes to kick it old school with curious george. before watching some episodes of the show online, she entertained me with a performance piece entitled, “The Sounds of Curious George.” make sure you wait for the pièce de résistance near the end, the Song of Curious George.
6. Pajama Party!

like most girls, naomi loves to get comfy in her jim jams. NOT because she’s ready to go to sleep, as she will tell you in the following video, but because wearing pantyhose and heels all day can really wear a girl down.
after some quality time with curious george, naomi’s parents came home and she gave me the boot.

i think it’s obvious that i would totally repeat this “favor” to naomi’s parents anytime. cos we had a blast!
naomi, thanks for letting me chill with you. HOMEGIRLS 4-EVER!

attention internet: thank you for offering me the best political site, ever: YA (as in, young adult lit) FOR OBAMA! i love it!!!
henri sent me this great article on slate about how birthday dinners are getting out of hand, both in size and price. even though i love celebrating birthdays, i found this article to be DOUBLE TRUE, except for the author’s claims that people don’t take the time to pass around the check and itemize it. heh. YEAH THEY DO.
i totally want to hang out in the new octopus project video.
I FINALLY GOT INVITED TO AN AUCTION… in new york. did you know you have to pay to get into an auction? anyone wanna loan me $150 plus money for an actual piece of art? kthx.
this robotic, sun-seeking planter thing is really, really cool. and also kinda creepy. i would totally get one as a pet, cos it moves around but won’t poop anywhere.
Oh my goodness! She is so stinkin’ precious! Even though you included lots of pics and vids, I could not get enough! She is just gorgeous! Truly stunning, and so sweet! I know what you mean about getting alot out of being around her. I do not have kids yet, and I LOVE being around them. So fulfilling!
This is a weird question, but does she by any chance go to Montossori school? I am an Early Childhood Education major (and I have a neice in Montossori) and watching her play, she looks like a “child of Montossori.” Anyways, that’s probably random, but I was just curious…
how cute is this?!
also that birthday dinner article was hilarious. and true. also those dinners are often kinda awkward. parties are way better.
It looks like you two had a great time together! And what a doll- She has gotten so big! I love the songs she sings (esp. the one she did when she was making her doll bed). So, so cute!!!
So cute!
I totally thought that birthday article was interesting and you could probably center a whole post around it and what people think. What I found interesting was that alot of people seem to think that if you have a birthday dinner (and say invited your friends to come) then you are hosting it and you should pay for everyone’s dinner. I find this to be odd since I always thought that you should treat the birthday person. I do agree that they can get out of hand and would totally understand if someone had to bow out for financial reasons. I also try to have birthday dinners at moderately priced places. Interesting…
selina, i was actually thinking the same thing, about writing a whole post about that dinner article… so everyone else, save yr “birthday dinner” comments for today’s (thursday) post!
I was just about to comment on the birthday dinner post! But I will not.
Naomi makes EXCELLENT monkey sounds. That girl is meant for the silver screen!
I think what’s uber precious is her little bucket with her name painted on it! I’m totally jealous! I also enjoyed that she seems to enjoy having her moo-moos “here”, and rarely “there”. “A moo moo, here. And, a moo moo here.” Who can I write to in order to officially change the lyrics to that song?
