dear diary pants: “at least God doesn’t care if I have a boyfriend”

in today’s post, we learn the following about the teenage world of posh d. pants:

1. people bought movies on VHS!!!

2. maintaining a “movie reputation” involves watching as many mainstream films as possible.

3. when you don’t fit in, it sucks. a lot.*

4. keanu reeves = perfect topic for sunday school, obviously.

*this first entry is pretty much one big ouch. i really want to give my 1994 self a hug.

FYI:

“UM Army” = United Methodist Army, which sounds freaky but is really just like a service corps.

“UMYF” = United Methodist Youth Fellowship.

7/17/94

Maintained my movie reputation by seeing “True Lies” with Arnold Sw… (I’m not even going to try to spell it) and Jamie Lee Curtis. It was good- lotsa action, blowing up, guns and some funny stuff (Tom Arnold was fun-ny!). I also bought “The Fugitive” for $10.00 at Lakewood Forest Video. I watched it this evening– as good as ever.

Everyone from UM Army came back yesterday– saw them at Sunday School and UMYF swimming party at Jessica N.’s house. I still don’t feel very comfortable. Sometimes I feel alone. I don’t think they do it on purpose, but I always feel left out. I don’t think it’s because I try to seclude myself– I think it’s because I can’t flirt, I don’t know all of the gossip, I’m not funny (at least, around them) and I don’t have experience in guys and stuff.

Mom suggested us trying a new church, but I really don’t know. I’ve worked hard to get where I am– but I’m pretty close to nowhere. Would it be the same at every church? Or do I just need to gain more self-confidence? Or is it too late to change the image I’ve made of myself– quiet, smart and boring?

Well, at least God doesn’t care if I have a boyfriend or can give Jason a wedgie.

7/24/94

I added another movie to my list– “The Client.” It was purty good– Tommy Lee Jones is a *great* actor, and so is Susan Sarandon. I might even read the book.

Sunday School was pretty good today– I was proud of myself. See, we were doing this thing on love, and Mr. Sneed asked if anyone believed in love at first sight, and why or why not. Well, I raised my hand and said, “I say yes, I believe in love at first sight, because when I saw Keanu Reeves… no just kidding.” And then I went on to my real explanation. Everybody laughed. Isn’t that cool? [ed note: oh sweet fancy moses].

“Lethal Weapon” was on TV– it was ok. “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” is better– I taped it. I <3 Gabrielle Anwar (also <3ed her in “Scent of a Woman”). And Al is so cute!!! [ed note: i see we're on a first name basis]. I wish that kind of “impossible romance” would happen to me!

Dude, the Fugitive IS still good.

I just can’t believe you were so self-aware!! You had cultivated an image! I had assumed I was just plain awful and did nothing about it.

And, I had forgotten about passive-aggressive notes. It is wonderful. I heard about it through a video game reviewer who had gotten a pretty ridiculous letter from a PR guy at a big publisher. My dad and I have conversations about these things too, it’s astonishing what people will do before thinking it through!

Just saying “Hi.” I came across your blog in a completely random fashion, but I am so glad I did. You are so much fun to be around, even if only on the internet! Thanks for making me laugh until I cry just about every day! :)

And I can so totally relate to the young you. That was so *me* in middle school. Haha, maybe I’ll have to start posting my diary entries on my blog. You are brave! :)

Sarah Palin just said America was great cause it respected women’s rights and I nearly choked on my tasty beverage.

Oh, 1994 Sarah. I just want to give you a hug and watch Speed with you. It’s funny though, isn’t it - at that age everyone assumes it’s them and that they’re the problem (too smart, too dumb, too shy, too loud, too flighty, too serious, etc etc). When really, the secret’s just to find the people who compliment your personality, instead of bending yours to compliment theirs.

I love Passive Aggressive Notes. That, menwholooklikeoldlesbians and the blog about superfluos apostrophes are some of my favorites.

Aww, little 1994 Sarah! Just look to the future to discover how impossibly hot and popular you will become. It will make you feel much, much better.

Dude. I LOVE THE FUGITIVE. Like, way, way too much. I’ve seriously watched it three times…THIS YEAR.

Also, you saw The Client on my 13th birthday!

Is it a sin to give wedgies?

Can I be the first to point out that you thought Tom Arnold was fun-ny? Yes? Excellent. That is fun-ny.

Anne Hathaway: She is attractive. I’ve heard her new interview in Esquire gets fairly detailed about…um…some interesting things. That’s all I’ll say.

I had no idea you were a Methodist, Sarah. I think that explains everything. And by everything I mean why you’re so awesome. From a recent piece by Sam Harris on Sarah Palin:

“Palin believes that this will be a good thing—as all true Christians will be lifted bodily into the sky to make merry with Jesus, while all nonbelievers, Jews, Methodists and other rabble will be punished for eternity in a lake of fire.”

“Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” was my favorite movie for the longest time. I love that Al was also Jake Ryan AND Winona Ryder’s love interest in “Mermaids.”

True Lies is so fun. It was on last week and I watched some snippets. I also will stop my flipping and watch the Fugitive whenever I come across it. I had the pleasure of showing it to William last Sunday. He’d never seen it.

I loved that deer!!! Best line was about the itty bitty deer being “a warm chocolate chip cookie with a halo”.

I taped Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken as well. It is… SO good.
