Great site and pictures. My family was also in Rothwesten in 1964-67. I was in 5th, 6th 7th grade and have great memories of Germany.

So when did you become a Republican? Is that in Part 2? Just kidding . . .

This is very interesting. It's fun to read about all of these things, living all over the world, etc. The pictures supplement the text perfectly. I'm ready for the next segment.

Josh, Sometimes it would enter my mind who the previous occupants were at the bases I was stationed at and I would try to visualize what it must have been like. I don’t think that the base at Rothwestern and Lenggries were ever touched by the war. Rothwestern was an air base and from the stories I heard it was camouflaged well enough (all the buildings were in the forest) to avoid allied bombing. The landing strip was grass and they keep sheep around so with the allies would fly over they would only see a meadow with sheep. Couldn’t confirm it but it was a good story. Lenggries is a very small base and I was made to understand was used to train the German Mountain troops. I do regret not asking the locals about the history. Walking through the graveyard at the church one would see many graves with a picture of a soldier.

To learn German I took and on base course and then dated a German girl who could speak no English. Amazing how fast you learn a language when you are dating someone who doesn’t speak your language. However I just learn enough to pass and was never real fluent. After all this time I just remember a few key words and phrases.
Henri, in that day slide pictures were the preferred picture medium because of the resulting color quality. As I haven’t converted all the slides to digital (I have over 1000 or more), I had to use what photos were available. I wish we had digital in that day.
From what I have read on this blog many of you are having interesting and exciting lives. I do suggest that you ask your parents to submit to such an interview, as I believe you will discover some interesting family history.

I really love the way you're just going from country to country and state to state and getting involved in all of the high-impact activities you possibly can, but every afternoon seems to end with going somewhere to watch the girls walk by.

I only wish you'd had digital cameras back then so that there could be tons and tons of pictures (like the kind Sarah's kids, should she have some, will be subjected to if they ever decide to interview her for a hologram blog on the Internet of the future).

This is awesome. I think the pic of the smiling administrative specialist for the 402 USASA SOD is basically my favorite picture that has ever been on this blog.

I am really excited for today's interview installment. And I am considering stealing a variation of your interview for my blog.

Mr. Al is so much fun to read about! I love the "European look" and "Nazi" pictures and hearing about the historical military life. What a fun start to the working world - being able to travel all over! I can't wait to hear the rest of the story.

I'm enjoying your stories, Al! Was it a bit strange working in formerly Nazi bases? And how did you learn German?
