what’s the deal with art museums: a posh d. survey

so, i have a survey for you guys.

and i KNOW that some of you LOVE to fill out surveys, esp. the kind about the last person you dated or what color underwear you prefer or whatever. well, this isn’t THAT kind of survey, but if you think expressing yr opinion is fun, well, this will be fun! yay!

basically, i want to know: how do you feel about art museums?

as i mentioned in a previous post, i’m taking a class on art museum education, and we’re putting together a website for a new exhibit coming to UT.

[due to copyright issues, i have removed all text concerning this project. which sucks]

so today in class, we were talking about the social mission of our project, which isn’t something you necessarily consider when you’re thinking about museums. but don’t museums have a social responsibility? they exist to educate and enlighten, right? so, how can they do that *equitably*? how can we make sure that we’re presenting information that would interest people beyond art fiends and students on school tours?

how could we use, say, this painting to raise the consciousness of a person from small town, texas or improve the life of the child with immigrant parents?

how can we translate the art and ideas of the artist group into tools that will enhance a person’s intellect, perspective or even just one moment in their daily life?

i’m not asking you to necessarily consider these questions as part of the survey (although yr feedback, as always, is welcome).

what i AM asking YOU, survey pants, is:

do you like art museums?

when you go to an art museum, what do you expect to get out of it?

do you feel like you learn something from art museums?

inquiring pants truly do want to know.

p.s. i’ll keep you updated on this project, cos i really do think it’s cool. and then you can let me know if the finished product (website) actually served up something fresh for you or if i failed miserably and you think the paintings are just a bunch of boring geometric shapes.
