update from nyc (well, connecticut, really)

oh xanga, it has been too long!

i’m sitting here in katrina july’s family abode in connecticut. stella electra is packed to the max and we depart at 6:00 AM tomorrow for austin! (well, with a few stops in between).

i had a marvelous, cosmo-fabulous time with ryan in NYC. of course i’ve been keeping a polaroid journal so i will tell all upon my return (until yr eyes glaze over). the highlights have included: the dia: beacon art collection (viva marfa!), the music of gloria deluxe, encounters with a former ktru dj in brooklyn and two models in the subway (one of whom teaches architecture at rice!!), and a zabar’s picnic in central park (complete with the adorable combination of a sprinkler and shrieking children). and of course a plethora of homestar runner references sprinkled throughout (i even met a friend of ryan’s who is the author of strongbad email 42!).

honestly, i couldn’t have asked for a better adventure… and i’m only halfway through. i’m sure that when katrina and posh hit the road, it can only get more fabulous!

…to be continued… (sorry there’s no alias-style cliffhanger but just pretend you’re in suspense, k?)

i’m sitting here at my parent’s house, cos my mom is going to drive me to the airport tomorrow so i can catch my flight to NYC. i am getting really excited!!!

i also had an excellent and extremely typical conversation with my dad about footwear for planes. it went a little something like this:

Dad: So, are you wearing your flips flops on the plane?

Sarah: Yeah. That way I can slide them off when I go through security.

D: Well, I just read an article about how it’s not safe to wear flip flops on planes because if there is an emergency, they might trip you up while you are trying to exit.

S: Um… well, if there is an emergency, I’ll just kick them off. That way, they won’t trip me if I’m running to escape the plane. How does that sound?

D: I think you should wear tennis shoes so I won’t have to worry about it.

S: I think I’ll just kick off my flip flops if our plane crashes.

[conversation moves on, time passes]

D: You know, another reason I always wear shoes on the plane is because people might drop their luggage on your feet and hurt your toes.

S: I’m going to wear my flip flops. My feet are tough. They can handle it. I don’t want to wear shoes cos I’ll just have to take them off to go through security.

D: Well, I’d be a lot happier if you would wear shoes.

S: Ok, thanks Dad. I’ll take your comments into consideration.

this is one of the many reasons why my dad is so great. he loves me so much that it makes him look ridiculous sometimes. :)
oh, and i AM wearing flip flops on the plane. but don’t worry, they kick off easily in case of emergency.

i am in lurve with internet activism. i know, in many cases, it can be sort of a cop-out… but MoveOn and Voice4Change are actually getting people to put the pressure on their government representatives to serve the community interest instead of their own.

for example, i just called Rep. Bell’s office about the FCC rollbacks. it took less than 3 minutes, but i never would have done it if i hadn’t gotten the email you see below. and you can see, from the same email, that it makes a DIFFERENCE (finally).

*****

This week roughly 75 television network executives plan to descend on Capitol Hill to tell Congress they should go against the wishes of millions of Americans and allow more media concentration. We’ve been fighting the special interests and it is working.

Last week’s phone-in campaign brought in 17 new co-sponsors of the FCC rollback legislation in the House, and five new co-sponsors in the Senate. It reminded legislators that we are watching what they do, and that we’re not going away.

This week, the call-in campaign focuses on the House with a simple message: “We want a media that is diverse, competitive and engaged with the local concerns of our communities. We can only have that if House members support BOTH HR 2052 (Burr-Dingell) and HR 2462 (Sanders), measures that will overturn the FCC rule changes.” Your calls have gotten us this far. Now they can give us a win against one of the most powerful lobbies in Washington.

Please take three minutes to make the call now. Here’s how to get intouch with your Representative:

Representative R. Christopher Bell (D)

DC Phone: 202-225-7508

Then please let us know that you’ve taken action by going to:

http://www.moveon.org/fcccall.html?id=1519-2830923-CpTshy2L.74Fv0f7rjpvCQ

We’re making great headway together. Thanks for being part of thebiggest media reform movement our country’s seen in decades.

Sincerely,

–Eli Pariser, MoveOn.org, June 16th, 2003

Here’s an update from Common Cause and Free Press:

The fight for media reform on the Hill has been energized this week by a phone-in campaign organized by public interest media activists.

Thousands of citizens from across the country called their Members of Congress and urged them to support FCC rollback legislation in the House and Senate. These efforts were well rewarded. In the Senate, the bipartisan Stevens-Hollings bill picked up five more cosponsors, Senators Bob Graham (FL), Hillary Clinton (NY), Jack Reed (RI), Saxby Chambliss (GA), and Norm Coleman (MN) for a total of 43 co-sponsors.

In the House, the Burr-Dingell bill (HR 2052) picked up 17 new co-sponsors (including 4 Republicans), for a formidable sponsor total of 166. The Sanders bill (HR 2462), picked up 17 new co-sponsors, including another Republican, bringing the total House support to 82. Congressional support for a roll back can be expected to rise substantially in the next two weeks before the August recess.

The past three months have represented a sea change in how media policy is made in America. FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein estimates that nearly 2 million Americans have weighed in. Your active participation is the reason Congress may roll back the FCC ruling.

Please send this email along to anyone else you know who is interested in having a healthy democratic media.

back from arizona, on to new york!

i feel like such a xanga delinquent. oh how will i ever catch up?! this feels just like an anth class i took my last semester at rice on blues music in memphis… i never had time to do all of the reading, even though i really WANTED to cos it was so fascinating!

boo.

i’m back from arizona. seth and i had a wonderful drive back, including a rest stop picnic with roadrunners, a huge orange moon and a sign that said “NON STOP BEAUTIFUL LADIES”.

damn i wish i had a polaroid of that one.

i think i might go home tonite (after jazzercult of course) and try to catch up on all of my xanga homework while packing for my next trip to NYC! i can’t wait to go to zabar’s and H&H and the new museum for contemporary art with ryan and his ewan hair. too bad he can’t wear cute sweaters at the moment. and then i’ll be road tripping once again with katjuly from connecticut to austin. glam sunglasses, bags of gas station candy and postcards galore! not to mention a little pilgrimage to graceland…

but for now, i am at work. and that’s ok, cos i’ve only got one more day (for a while). and it’s almost 5.

too bad the hurricane didn’t save me from work altogether. but it did provide some dramatic rain, which is always thought provoking.

so here i am in tuscon, arizona with jesse groh, dannypants, ray and seth woods. and it is freaking hot. plus, there is cactus.

it’s so marvelous to see everyone… and seth e. comes in tonite as well! at some point this weekend we’re going to play mini-golf at this totally campy place called “magic carpet golf”. we passed by it last nite- i saw a big monkey (polaroid opportunity) and a huge easter island head that ray says smells like homeless people. summer fun here we come!

anyway, just a note to say hullo and explain my xanga silence… ok, back to watching “i heart the 80’s” on vh1 (did i mention that it’s like 108 degrees outside?!). “what’s yr damage, heather?!”

Monday July 7, 2003 at 05:00 pm

i spent the evening of the fourth doing exactly what i had hoped: dancing with kids and sparklers. it was perfect. i learned that veronica’s favorite colors are pink and orange, and she can ride her bike with one hand! rowan’s favorite food is carrots (!), and he thought the fireworks were a bit too loud.

and emily can’t talk yet but she certainly bounced herone and a half year old self around the street and found a particularly fascinating piece of white napkin that she waved around like a sign of surrender.

yeah, my parents have marvelous children on their street. i’m so jealous.

also, i saw three films. charlie’s angels made me want to wear glitter eyeshadow and stilettos while kicking major ass… damn those girls make it look easy! and then last nite jesse groh and i saw T3!!! claire was so freaking great. and jesse and i agreed that the end wasa bit of a surprise, which is always a good thing for movies in the blockbuster-action family.

i have nothing very deep to say, since it’s MONDAY and also i’ve been busy at work (a growing trend, i’m afraid). but that’s ok… i’ll just leach off some depth from my xanga compadres…

wah wah waaaah

it’s criminal to spend as much time on the internet as i have in the past week at work… but… yeah, there’s no excuse. i just don’t want to work, and i would much rather read the musings of my friends via web journals and email.

yesterday i came back from austin and for some *ridiculous* reason had decided to only take the morning off. therefore, i had to come in and work during the afternoon. which was the *last* thing i felt like doing after havinga lovely time in austin with seth w. and josh k. and then a nice lunch with jesse g. back in h-town at empire.

plus it’s fucking hot in houston.

so i pull out this dress that i haven’t worn in ages and put it on, simply because it’s so hot and i don’t care.

i am definitely donating this dress to goodwill after yesterday.

but it was good as a symbolic tool to display my disinterest in work.

apparently it was *too* good cos then my boss asked me, out of the blue, ifi planned on sticking around after next year is up (signifying the end of my 2 year commitment). it was like this strange, sudden, defining moment for posh deluxe.

and i hear myself saying, “no, probably not.” whoah!

and he was totally cool with it! and i felt very liberated and free. i just… wasn’t expecting that moment to happen so soon.

but the problem with it occuring yesterday is that already i am thinking about what i would rather be doing. and it’s just not time yet. i still have another year of this job. and i think that’s what is supposed to happen. i just need to buck up and deal with it.

so one problem, i think, with this webjournal business, is that there is this pressure to write things that sound hip or poetic. and sometimes you just need to rant or babble or write things in basic terms. even if it doesn’t sound interesting. so i refuse to feel bad for writing something that i am thinking, even if it doesn’t come across in very prosaic terms.

so, yeah.

after commenting on heyzeus’ page, i figured out my question of the day (since i want to fit in with all of my xanga peers).

if you could set a guinness world record for ANYTHING, what would it be?

Wednesday July 2, 2003 at 05:00 pm

dude, i am starting to get stressed by xanga! (although not as stressed as i was last nite watching “spellbound” and seeing all of these kids trying to spell their way to the top of the national spelling bee… wow. what a marvelous movie. you MUST go. the kids are amazing… endearing… quirky… intense… nerdy… basically, all of them would fit in at rice. it’s proof of why documentaries are TOTALLY my favorite genre).

anyhoo, i’ve actually been busy at work (what?!) but i’ve devoted some time to catching up with all of these serious questions being tossed around about first kisses and top five novels. so my own entries may look at bit scarce but i’m still around. xanga is a priority, you’ve got to believe me!

and in other news i just moved next door to a slightly bigger office. and yes, katrina july, it does have corners (but not THE corner).

i’d forgotten how marvelous it is to listen to the beatles in the morning. you should try it.

speaking of “shoulds”, everyone needs to read ameliorator’s post from yesterday with the comment thread. i heart xanga only cos i heart my friends. they are all brilliant and precious.
