i meant to post this the other day but was so depressed about the vote that i forgot. at least there is still hope… i guess?
On June 2nd, the FCC voted to make sweeping changes in the rules governing who owns the media in this country. As a result:
–Mergers between TV stations will be allowed in over 160 media markets representing 90% of the American viewing public.
–TV/newspaper mergers will be allowed in over 190 media markets representing 98% of Americans.
–These mergers will be allowed without any possibility for challenging; the FCC automatically approves them all.
What could happen next? The FCC’s decision will allow almost two-thirds of the markets in the country to have only four local news sources, and a single dominant newspaper/TV conglomerate could control well over half the news audience and two-thirds of the reporters in any given market.
Help protect your right to a diverse and open media. Tell your Senators and Representative to overturn the FCC’s debacle. Your participation takes two minutes and will make a difference.
